I thought about doing a ryzen build for myself, but the Intel Optane memory changed my mind completely. I am now planning to build on a Kaby Lake, using 2 x 32GB optanes in a raid 0 stripe to cache everything from a spinner so I can keep origin and steam games there and keep my SSD free for OS and such.
Well, the 32GB optane chips are around $75 each. Put a 4tb spinner behind it for around $150 and you have 4TB of super fast SSD level storage for less than $300.
A 2TB samsung SSD is around $750. So, 2x as much for 1/2 the size. That gives me 64GB of faster than RAM cache, in a raid 0 stripe.
Writes are just not an issue at all Cliff.
As long as you have no issues with R0 all should be good but it has been my experience that when some new tech drops such as this a lot of times raid has not been implemented very well from the outset. It's just not a priority. That was how it was when the 950 ssd's dropped, R0 was a mess.
Hopefully Intel has this better nailed down.
I'm not worried about writes to the SSD. With so many new games coming in at fifty to a hundred gigs in size using an SSD is still a bit cost-prohibitive..
