One should never disappoint their Nephews. Go get a TI. You know you want to and you know you are going to. Quit fighting the inevitable, just do it.

I just passed the on the opportunity to get that EVGA 1080 FTW 2 and instead deleted out my B&H shopping cart and just purchased a Samsung 2TB EVO SSD drive :)

It was actually more expensive than the GPU, but I went with the SSD drive as I've been wanting it for a while now, but had a hard time justifying the cost. Anyway I'll be using it primarily as my gaming/multimedia drive. It'll fit nicely with my Samsung 950 Pro NVMe drive, and my Samsung 850 Pro drives (both 512 gig). The 950 is OS, the 850 my photowork drive, and now the 2TB my gaming drive. The only HDD drive I'll have in my system is my removable (hot swappable) 2TB drive for auto backups.

Turns out it's the 1080 I can't justify at this point in time since my R9 Fury is still gaming well, but...

Yeah, I like to put graphics at max, and I have no problems staying above 60FPS which is all I can do with my monitor. So, if I can do that, then I have all of the eye candy I can use.

I understand color accuracy. I have used IPS panels for years. My gamer friends maintain they aren't fast enough to game with, but they work for me. I haven't used a crappy TN panel in years.

While my eyes aren't fantastic, my ears are much better. I tend to be more of an audio guy and I quibble over headphones. Got a few different sets of cans. 1 for work (grados) and 1 for home (audio technica). Looking at some Beyer Dynamics for work. But got other priorities.

That nephew who does what I call "those pro tour on line gaming events" is in his mid 20's, has a job and buys his own stuff. Come to think of it, not one was over 40 (what old guy could last all night gaming) so I guess they could really SEE and feel the high refresh rate, high FPS difference at their young age.

I will tell you, those guys are good, and what a great bunch of guys. The camaraderie they have. Some of them will be my nephew's friends for a lifetime. Priceless!

There's another benefit of the high end hardware club. Better him doing that than hitting the bars every weekend or worse. Even for me, I doubt I would have joined the 10 forum if I wasn't interested in high end hardware and seen threads like this. Although (yes Brink) I do enjoy gaming on Windows 10.

But what a shame it would have been for me not getting to know the fine people who post in these threads.

And yes that even includes you pparks1. :)

Well thanks. I am a Windows and Linux server admin for a living. So, I work with some really high end hardware, just not as much on the consumer side. It may also be part of the reason I don't do as much at home anymore, because I spend so much time doing it at work over the past 20 years. Today, I did some work in a vmware environment with 175 hypervisors and 5100 virtual machines. And my work laptop is a dell precision with a Xeon processor, Nvidia Quadro graphics, and NvME SSD. So, I get to use some nice hardware.

Same here. And yeah, I've heard the same charge about IPS panels not being good for gaming. I've never had an issue though, and still don't with the stated 8ms response time of my 24 inch NEC wide gamut monitor. No ghosting, no lag.

LOL - same here. I built a audiophile system around my PC with a Teac UD-503 USB DAC. Audioengine A5+ powered speakers, and for cans I have a pair of Sennheiser HD700's and a pair of Audio Technica ATH M50X's. I also have a pair of Bose QC 25's that I use for traveling. Anyway here's my DAC and HD700 cans...

Yeah, a bunch of us guys were discussing 60hz, versus 120, versus 144 at work the other day. A couple of the guys hands down can see a noticeable difference and can identify the refresh rate. Other of us though, could not tell a difference. Its most likely we haven't been trained on exactly what to look for, but its hard to describe something as a night and day difference if you have to be told where the differences are.

I fall into that category of people who can barely perceive the difference. With my old man eyes, and surgery I had as a kid for a wandering eye, I just don't perceive it the same. (I also cannot see the 3D effect in movies).

So, there you have it. I live in lowly 60Hz land and see as well as I going to. When I build a new system for myself, I will likely get a high refresh rate monitor to give to my son and take his 24" Dell Ultrasharp.
Interesting conservation. I still live in the 60Hz club and have always heard what people say about higher frame rates. I did move up to a higher resolution monitor...going up from 1080p to 1440p I can see a big difference. But when I game I wear my reading glasses and usually my beer googles

I do not see all the tearing and such people talk about. I have watched videos explaining it, still no difference in my experience though

Totally with you on higher resolutions. At my last job, I ran a 27" monitor at 2560x1440. I really liked that monitor. But higher framerates...sorta lost on me.
