Windows 10: 2017 Hardware Thread

I think, as specialkone was saying, much of it can depend on skill and a lot can depend on expectations. To a novice, a 3770K that can get to 4.6 is a good overclocking chip. To a serious experienced overclocker, if that's all it will do, it is a dog. I consider myself far from an expert overclocker, but I do know my way around a bios. I have owned about 5 3770K's. 3 of them, about 4.7-4.8 is the max I could get out of them. I have 2 that can run 5 GHz 24/7 on less than 1.3 V, all on the same board. I still have 1 one of them, just because I haven't been able to bring myself to sell it. In my experience almost all the newer chips will overclock pretty well, but if you are looking for 5+ GHz, you need to win that lottery (7700K's not included).
What we were doing with that FX 8350 was on even terms. Two experienced OCers (I OC even a toaster), Same MB with same BIOS version, all same HW including cooling (CM 612Evo) And all of that done during few days. First example (it was few years ago so don't take everything literary and exact), couldn't even run at 1.52v while the last one run at 5GHz (stable) with less than 1.5v. Later on would validate at 5.2GHz but with CM 240 AiO liquid and no other stability at all.
It was all done with some of first Vishera processors because nobody believed it could hit stable 5GHz on air. P.S. there were no 220W MBs back then yet, we had to settle for 140W Ga 990fx- UD7.

LOL essenbe, if you're not an expert overclocker there must be no definition for my ocing "skills".

When I tried an oc on this I7 6700k I had to go listen to "Joanne Tech Lover" as that bios is similar to mine. Put in her exact settings and 1.31V at 4.6 was fine. Notice she says some might get to only 4.4 at 1.31 but some may get to 4.8 at 1.31. I didn't as at 4.8 I needed about 1.35.

How to Overclock Your CPU: Intel 6700K, Asus VIII Hero: Tutorial - YouTube
Dude, I do believe you have me mistaken with someone else. In the realm of overclocking, I am little more than a "shade tree mechanic", a tinkerer with a touch of insanity. I enjoy 'playing in BIOS' when I get bored. I just sometimes wonder, 'I know they say don't do that. I wonder what will happen if I do it anyway' and have the guts stupidity to try it anyway. That is why I can say I have screwed up systems almost every way possible. I always encourage others not to do what I do. Didn't you wonder a little when I said I have had 5 3770K's? Didn't you ask yourself, why would anyone buy that many CPUs? That is why I am much better at telling people what not to do than I am at telling them what to do. I'm one of those who know that Intel said 'don't go over 1.4 V, but I just don't believe them. At least with a 3770K, I can tell you, if you have the cooling, exactly how many Volts you can feed the CPU to the extent that if you add .005v more, you will be conducting a funeral. That number would surprise a lot of people too. No, I just like to tinker and have pretty much been out of the business for a few years. It gets expensive. But an expert? Not even in the same ball park with an expert.

A guy who knows his way around a bios like you do, but not an OC expert. Ya, right. A guy who takes risks with his hardware like you but not an OC extremist. Ya right. You're my true definition of an OC expert:

    1) I would never buy your used hardware.
    2) Dude likes you.

Mike's right. Poop and double poop.

    1. @Dude likes me because he's a better overclocker than I am.

    2. If you hear rumors about me rummaging through my Watercooling boxes, I will show you how good my 'used' hardware is. I have a 3770K that will run 5 GHz at about 1.25-1.27 V and other than that 1 time testing, it has lived its entire life running stock as an HTPC. Kind of like a savings account.

    Microsoft Surface Book Pro 2

Anyone here looking at getting one of the new Microsoft Surface Book Pro's (supposedly the Pro 2)?

I was pretty much set to get the Surface Book with Performance Base - 1TB / Intel*Core*i7. With my school discount it drops to around 2800. Still steep but something I want.

Anyway I've been reading rumors about the impending release of the SB Pro 2 sometime within the next couple of weeks. Possibly with the Creator's update release if some of those rumors are to believed. The Pro 2 is said to be using the Kaby Lake processors, true 4K monitor, an upgraded NVidia graphics card, plus minor tweaks here and there. There's also the newly released rumor now that the notebook may will be just a standard clamshell notebook instead of the just having the removable base.

I'm getting one, I'm just awaiting to release news and pricing.

    Thoughts?

Not me Drew. I've often thought they had great specs, but not something I would use that often.

    A notebook? or their notebook?

Kind of torn now because one the most appealing attraction of the SB Pro is the ability to remove the base and just use it as a pad. If they move to a clamshell system, that might make me think twice.
