I don't know about GPUs but a friend of mine and I went thru 3 FX8350s until only fourth was able to run 5GHz full time. If that's no silicone lottery....

I was just messing around with GIMP this morning and made a neat avatar(one of my other hobbies), and thought that either @sygnus21 or @specialkone might like it, seeing that neither have an avatar.

Ah, thank you cliff for the generous offer. I actually (had) an avatar but was thinking about closing my account sometime back thus I removed it, as well as hid my rep status.

Truly appreciate the offer though and like the design, but I usually use one of my photos for my avatar.

    Thanks.

Every FX chip i have owned has gotten to 4.8Ghz with the same settings and have gone to 5+Ghz it's more or less cooling for those chips than anything

the voltage alone is just crazy stable 4.8 took between 1.477volts to 1.488 1.52 for 5Ghz but the problem is the TJ max was so low it would hit 62c in seconds

Just a small sample, but if you look here on one of the EVGA forum threads, users are posting their max oc with the 1080 FTW. Most are ocers from way back and are approaching it the same way. Keep increasing core until it fails and then after adjust memory. Some are adjusting voltage but most aren't.

If you look at the numbers, some can't go past a +75 core while others are up to +150 or more. Can't all be cooling differences. There was one guy (different thread which I can't find) who never overclocks and was worried as in game with default settings he was hitting 2150 regularly. LOL.

It's interesting to see the numbers on each card but personally as a gamer I mostly care about this FTW 1080 maintaining its advertised boost clock of 1860. I never go below about 1932 in long hours of gaming and I don't oc for gaming. The card often hits 2,000 with no OC. With an OC on it doesn't go below 2,000 and hits 2,114+. But I've seen guys who know what they are doing (all using "basic overclocking) who struggle to see 2,000-2,050 for more than a couple of seconds.

We can all draw our own conclusions, but even the EVGA forum mods, reviewers like Jayz, etc say the cards do not all perform the same.

I think, as specialkone was saying, much of it can depend on skill and a lot can depend on expectations. To a novice, a 3770K that can get to 4.6 is a good overclocking chip. To a serious experienced overclocker, if that's all it will do, it is a dog. I consider myself far from an expert overclocker, but I do know my way around a bios. I have owned about 5 3770K's. 3 of them, about 4.7-4.8 is the max I could get out of them. I have 2 that can run 5 GHz 24/7 on less than 1.3 V, all on the same board. I still have 1 one of them, just because I haven't been able to bring myself to sell it. In my experience almost all the newer chips will overclock pretty well, but if you are looking for 5+ GHz, you need to win that lottery (7700K's not included).

LOL essenbe, if you're not an expert overclocker there must be no definition for my ocing "skills".

When I tried an oc on this I7 6700k I had to go listen to "Joanne Tech Lover" as that bios is similar to mine. Put in her exact settings and 1.31V at 4.6 was fine. Notice she says some might get to only 4.4 at 1.31 but some may get to 4.8 at 1.31. I didn't as at 4.8 I needed about 1.35.
