Windows 10: 2017 Hardware Thread

  1.    28 Feb 2017 #301

I just got a new laptop at my new job. In the companies I worked for previously, I always bought the hardware and set it up myself. In my new role, I am just managing servers, but am not involved on the desktop side and had no control whatsoever on my hardware. It seemed that the developers mainly working in Linux had Apple MacBook Pro's, and the people doing Windows engineering had Lenovo Yoga's and older Dell's.

I was pretty surprised to see a shiny new Dell Precision 5510 today when I came back from a meeting. It's more laptop than I would have picked for myself. It's running an Intel Xeon E3-1505M v5 Quad Core with Hyperthreading, with 16GB of 2133Mhz DDR4 RAM, a 512GB PCIe NVMe, and a 2GB Nvidia Quadro 1000M. It has the Intel Wireless-AC 8260 network card, and an IIPS 15.6" display in matte finish (it's like they read my mind on the Matte finish). I didn't get a ton of time to put it through it's paces, but it's certainly a new bit of kit.

That's an impressive piece of equipment you got there. I'm also a sucker for matt screens as well. I'm a bit jealous

Anyway, I don't have anyone giving me a notebook, but I'm looking at getting a Surface Book Pro with 16gig of RAM, the 512gig SSD drive and the dedicated NVidia graphics card. Hope the have it within the next month.

Enjoy your new toy. I'd be happy to take that one from you with those specs and that matt screen for the Surface Book Pro

Interesting, the Ryzen has brought some game to the field. Glad to see some competition for Intel. Speaking of gaming, Im glad I went with the Kaby Lake

Will be interesting to see how thing go after some motherboard BIOS updates. It's certainly true that AMD is brining a lot more into the game, but with a price drop by Intel it might not set the world on fire. Will certainly be keeping an eye on this.

I just had an interesting experience:

I wanted to bring my 4.92 OC down to 4.4, and have XMP setting my RAM @ 3000MHz, because I'm preparing to run a complete system image backup of 3 of my internal disks, for safe keeping on a new 3TB Seagate Expansion I bought this morning.

Macrium will be very busy for a while, and uses a lot of resources, and I want to use the PC while it's doing it's thing(I have USB Speed UP from MSI to give it a push), but with the 4.92GHz OC, I'm not sure if I can have all my other stuff going on and still remain stabile.

Anyhow, after I lowered the OC to just using 44x multiplier, and every thing but RAM at OOBE settings(mostly "Auto"), I notice inside of Windows, my CPU started running pretty warm, about mid 60's and 4.4GHz, instead of running in the low 30's like the 4.92 OC(at idle, this is right after booting back into Windows).

In task Manager, I found out that intel(R) Integrated Clock Controller Service - Intel(R) ICCS(ICCProxy) was the culprit and was using 56% CPU

After a bit of looking at settings again in UEFI/BIOS and in Windows and not finding anything, I went and smoked one outside, and it came to me to run winsat formal in an admin command prompt, and reboot so windows can make adjustments under the hood what in needs.

    And it worked!!!

And now, while multi tasking the system, it stays in the mid to high 30's.

I'll run the backup tomorrow now, it's going to take a while to do it and now it's 7:30 in the evening.
