My personal desktop at home is old. A q9550 cpu, with 8gb of ram, with a 240gb SSD and nvidia 570gtx from 2009.

But my sons computer which I built for last Christmas, is on an M2 NvME drive. And I work in IT, so my work laptop is also quite beefy.

So, I have experience with both new and old.

My oldest daily driver is a PowerBook G4 12" with 1.25Ghz PPC G4 with 1.25GB RAM. Still usable.

Installing Ubuntu on it at the moment and have a play with it again as it works very well with 2GB RAM.

Decided to Install Windows Server 2008 R2. Working very well indeed but must get my grubby hands on some more RAM.
    Update:

Installed 2 x 250 GB drives and a single 320 GB drive in a RAID 0 config and reinstalled Server 2008 R2 all going well. Downloaded the evaluation ISO of Server 2012 R2 and going for an in place upgrade.

    Note:

This server has some very funny quirks, If i use any of the PCI-e slots the fans keep spinning at a very high rate which make your ears bleed so I have removed the PCI-e WiFi card. Using HP IP (Intelligent Provisioning) to install the OS via USB from an ISO It can only read from a FAT32 and the limits of FAT32 is I can not put Server 2012 R" due to the 4.2 GB size so Install the 3.1 GB ISO for server 2008 R2 first then upgrade to Server 2012 R2 after.

Worf, that sounds like a real pain. Maybe buy some quieter fans.

Maybe I don't understand, but if you burn the ISO to a USB, you wouldn't have any individual files that exceed the 4.2 GB limit.

The ISO is to save finding all the drivers on HP horrible website as IP install these during install. Don't have any DVDs to burn image too as this would be the best approach. Updating server 2008 r2 just now.

Inplace upgrade to server 2012 r2 is not possible so will need a clean install which I will address at s later time.

New fans are not feasible as these are server grade delta fans
