I don't fit in any of those categories very well...I only buy and use exactly what I need and maybe a bit above that. But I guess I am closest to the Enthusiast Category. As I gather a lot of technical details about how parts work together before I even consider a purchase. I also try new software (everything from alpha to stable releases), but once I find something that does the job exactly as I want it to, I stop testing newer versions and only update if the update fixes some issues I have or does the job better than my current version.

I know what I need and want, and weigh what is the best option for a specific task or group of tasks for the best balance between price and performance. I am def. NOT a gamer/benchmarker, though I tend to benchmark(not with benchmarking software) and tweak my system as much as possible for optimized performance for a specific task. What score a benchmarking app gives me has usually no meaning to me though it can be a good reference in some cases. :)

Nice one, but you forgot one category between Average Users and Enthusiasts. The ones that look at the most balanced solutions available. Need to be fast hardware but not at the cost of overly priced hardware. This is also the category where most companies who upgrade their hardware belong.
I could have probably come up with many more categories but for clarity and brevity I chose the three general categories of PC users without regards to businesses since even their employees would fall within those three

    Peace

I wanted to rep you for the definitions Drew, but sadly I need to spread some more, before I can.
    Great post and explanation anyhow
Thank you Steve. Thank you Cliff. And yeah, I tend to find myself in the same boat of spreading the love :)

I think Sygnus got the categories exactly right. Like most things in life, you cannot put any group of people in a pigeon hole. There are always the exceptions and those who fall somewhere in between. As Sygnus said about himself, he falls somewhere in between 2 of them. As I was reading his list I got to enthusiast and thought, that's me. Then I read the Gamer/Benchmarker and said that's me too. I guess I'm both. I think most of us are that way, a little of a couple of things.
You got it Steve, and that was the point. And also give definition to terms I use when describing PC users.

If you tried to make categories to fit everyone it would be about as large as Webster's Dictionary, for those who remember what a dictionary looks like.
Exactly. And I'm of the impression those three general categories covers everyone and those in between.

    Thanks guys

I'm a PC enthusiast. I like good hardware but don't do anything crazy enough for a $2K desktop.

I just get bored with what I have too quickly

    After a year or two,
    It's time for something new!
That I can afford, of course, so I start saving for the next, just after I have the new...

Looking at my current rig's parts going all the way back to 2010 when I bought my HAF X case, to 2017 when I bought both a 1 & 2TB SSD drive prices my rig at $3,900 bucks

You can have a look at My Computer specs to see this system. Other than the case, most of the parts were bought between 2016 and 2017. BTW, $1,680.00 bucks is in SSD's alone. 4 of them

The only thing I need now is a new GPU and I'm done for awhile. Have spent way to much money on this system. This is why I say I'm skipping the this next generation new chips and stuff. My next major build probably won't come until 20.

Maybe that's where I was mistaken. I thought Candy Crush was a virus.
