As I understand it, Mike. Broadwell E was supposed to be about a 7- 8% improvement over our CPUs. To me, not nearly enough to make a change. But, Skylake X is supposed to be something like a 25% improvement over Broadwell in single threaded applications and 10% better in everything else. If that ends up being true, it would mean around an 18% improvement for us. That's pretty significant to me.

Would this make Cortana smarter/more useful?
Still a "nice to have" though:)

ASUS ROG MAXIMUS VIII EXTREMEs USB 3.1 USB 3.0 Extended ATX Intel Motherboard - Newegg.com

Looks like it was extended though to 6-30-17
With the new skylake x series chips it could get interesting :)
    Hi,
Steve have any thoughts on this board ?
Seems like a good deal but I do hate having it hang around too long before installing a cpu seeing defective boards have been known to happen :/

Features wise I've always leaned to better to have them and not use them rather than want them and not have them :)

Tommy, you do what you want to. But, you and I talked about most of this video the other night. You knew about the different number lanes. It has always been that way with the E Series boards. Nothing has changed except they have thrown in the Kaby Lake chips with fewer cores and fewer lanes, but cheaper. The sales rationale is you can buy a new board with a Kaby Lake X CPU and later upgrade to a higher end CPU without having to buy a new board. The only real thing that was rushed was the real high end 18,16,14 core CPUs, which few of us are going to buy anyway. X99 is EOL. No more BIOS updates and no more driver updates. My board hasn't had a BIOS update for my CPU for about a year and a half. But the on chip graphics and the different number of lanes depending on which CPU you have is no different than it has always been.
That we did and yes the bios updates are dead but they only had three with the board i have so ..i don't know what could be worse

Anyway after searching around i'm going to watch and see how it goes when they finally hit the shelves

That is Asus top of the line board and has more features on it than probably any board. I had the Z77 version of that board. First it is expensive for an EOL board. If you read the reviews, they are not good. It seems that about 50% of the boards have issues. I would never buy another board from Newegg. They like to say it doesn't work because you damaged it. Been there, done that. Ended up having to email the Newegg CEO in Taiwan. I still got screwed out of money. I had a UPS Tracking number and a delivery confirmation and they still said they never received it and they didn't care what UPS said. That was on a CPU. The board was shipped with a bent CPU pin. They said I did it even though I never put a CPU in the socket and called them less than 30 minutes after it was delivered. I only buy from Amazon now. They have the best CS in the business as long as it is sold and shipped by Amazon.

Side tracking for a moment, this isn't the first time I've heard of stories like this about Newegg an is one reason I never give them serious consideration when purchasing parts. For me, it's either Amazon, or more recently, B&H Photo out of New York. Don't let photo fool you, as they also deal in PC parts and their prices are pretty competitive or even cheaper.

All that said, I did buy my Sapphire R9 Fury from them and had to RMA it for an issue. No problem there other than I thought the RMA process was a little slow. And by the time I got my tracking number the item was already delivered.

But yeah, I'm staying away from Newegg where possible.

Mike, I didn't look close enough, I thought it was an X99. But, I am reasonably sure the 170 is EOL. They have already come out with the 270 and now the x299, so yea, I am sure the 170 is EOL.

I have had friends have problems with NewEgg in the past on returns. I've been fortunate in that everything I have ever ordered from them has always worked. I've bought the majority of my hardware over the years from them. Amazon has been fantastic on returns and such over the years, so it would be hard to beat them.
