Personally, I liked the video and someone needed to do it. Others will do it as well, I'm sure. That being said, I think at least some of what Linus said was a little over dramatization. None of the X99 E series CPUs had on chip graphics either. That has always been a given. The lower end X99 CPUs had 28 lanes of traffic and the upper end has 40 lanes. That has always been that way. So, deciding how many CPU lanes you want and realizing that some features wouldn't work or work as well is nothing new. Intel just threw another option into the batch. It's not that hard to figure out.

Some of the stuff he talked about can be confusing to people and for months we all knew this was going to be a rush job. This chip release was never on Intel's timeline and it was well known it was in response to Ryzen. We also all know when you rush something, there will be kinks to work out. Before you AMD guys get too excited, yours was a rush job as well, has problems and they still haven't totally figured out the ram speeds. Overclocking Ryzen is, in my opinion, almost not worth the effort. Many more than one reviewer said AMD rushed it to market and should have worked out it's issues before the release. Maybe that will be worked out later, just as some of Intel's issues will be worked out with BIOS updates.

In my opinion, I think some of the stuff he talked about was good and needed to be said, although much of it was already known. Some of what he complained about was not noteworthy and has been that way on every enthusiast platform. Assuming everything works right and the performance is there, nothing he said would stop me from buying one if I wanted to.

The i7-6800K has 28 PCIe lanes, all the other CPUs in that release have 40 Lanes. The same with the previous enthusiast CPUs, the 5820 has 28 lanes, the others have 40. So, they gave the upper end 4 more lanes and threw in the Kaby Lake with fewer lanes. Same deal just another option.
He is right thought about Kabylake they should just dump that idea

Remember a few weeks back they said not to OC 7700k well seems like they reversed that too

Anyway it's always going to be something AMD Ryzen isn't even fully baked so i mean really if this is what's ahead of us rush jobs we might as well wait

Steve this video sheds lots of light on things i may end up investing in my X99 instead i have a 6-core i can go ahead and get a 8 core on the same platform they are cheaper now anyway

It's been three months that i have had the 6850k and i really love it so with that being said i am going to see if i can get micro center to swap me out and i pay the extra price that way ill be good and it won't be too much out of my wallet while the prices have dropped a more powerful cpu will still be in the same league as the new platform

Save some scratch besides that grab another GPU etc sounds a lot better 1080ti sli though may be another waste of cash there too

    Hi,
Came really close to buying this board memorial day sells but the rebate card expired on the 4th so I bailed to replace my 8.. year old acer board finally,
ASUS ROG MAXIMUS VIII EXTREMEs USB 3.1 USB 3.0 Extended ATX Intel Motherboard - Newegg.com

Looks like it was extended though to 6-30-17
With the new skylake x series chips it could get interesting :)

I think certain features are more important than others if you actually use them on motherboards b ut a lot of them are useless to some people
I never used Raid so all that needing a key business doesn't appeal to me but someone else yes
I also a fan of the Wifi that comes with X Boards
USB Type -C is another one i need my phones are all type c now
The list goes on but you get where i was going

For us not in the know, he gave us a lot of info and food for thought. With that, this just validates my willingness to wait another two years before upgrading since as I noted earlier, I just upgrade to a Kaby system less than two months ago.

Anyway by the time I upgrade, all this mess between Intel and board vendors will (should) be sorted out. In short, I'm sitting this one out.

    Hi,
Yeah I was also kicking this one around for a while seeing dual channel ram is sort of anticlimactic and neither skylake or kabylake had more than 4 cores :)

Tommy, you do what you want to. But, you and I talked about most of this video the other night. You knew about the different number lanes. It has always been that way with the E Series boards. Nothing has changed except they have thrown in the Kaby Lake chips with fewer cores and fewer lanes, but cheaper. The sales rationale is you can buy a new board with a Kaby Lake X CPU and later upgrade to a higher end CPU without having to buy a new board. The only real thing that was rushed was the real high end 18,16,14 core CPUs, which few of us are going to buy anyway. X99 is EOL. No more BIOS updates and no more driver updates. My board hasn't had a BIOS update for my CPU for about a year and a half. But the on chip graphics and the different number of lanes depending on which CPU you have is no different than it has always been.

Mike, Kaby Lake doesn't, Skylake is the new higher core CPUs.

    Hi,
Yep that is why I reconsidered skylake board :)
\Just haven't pulled the trigger seeing they have not released them yet so I put off the other x99 board until they do :)
Newegg has a good deal on 6850k with 130.us prom code off :/
Dang that sure is tempting and blowing off skylake for now and put the 6850k in my current asus x99

Mike, the 6850k isn't a big improvement over what you have now and although you will have to buy a board, you will be able to get a Skylake X 8 core for the same money.
But, you will only have 28 PCIe lanes. The only reason I know you would need more lanes is if you run SLI. I have the same CPU as you have, I think. I have never used more than 20 lanes so far.

    Hi,
Yep I find that really odd about the pcie lanes being less but it is a mobile first world now :)
I did notice not much improvements and is originally why I have been leaning more towards another x99 build :/

My acer board is so old now it's amazing it still works being transplanted and all in a new case same as my newer x99 is in lol it seems way to ready for a newer board :)
