Well, looks like the new Intel chips are official.

Intel's Core i9 and Skylake-X parts deliver up to 18 cores on the desktop

In my head, I thought "$600 for an 8 core? Not bad. Maybe I should start looking into a new motherboard."

I may need to take a break from computer related sites for a bit. Not sure my wallet can handle much more torture.

Yeah, I had similar thought. I have to eventually build myself a new desktop. My current desktop is from June of 2007. My son (9)has a build from this past December, so I usually use his.

    Please pay attention!!!

I posted about a month ago that I moved from a Z170 MB & i7-6700K to a Z270 MB & i7-7700K and was supposed to sell the old parts. Well the sell didn’t go through.

With that, I decided today that I would replace the Haswell (i7-4790K) system inside my Phanteks case with the Z170 MB & CPU. Got everything removed and installed in the case, hook up CPU Cooler, power connectors, GPU and all is good just need to install the RAM. BAM!…... It’s DDR3!!!

Stupid me seriously forgot my Haswell board (Z87) uses DDR3 RAM, and thus it won’t install on a DDR4 board. I don’t even have any extra DDR4 RAM around, and don’t have the funds to purchase some anytime soon. Needless to say, I had to rebuild the Haswell system.

PLEASE PAY ATTENTION!!! was what I was screaming at myself for such a dumb@ss move

Drew, don't be so hard on yourself. We've all done stuff like that. I've done much worse actually. But with all these chipsets and intricacies of each one, it isn't hard to get confused.

I'm not hard on myself because of what you say. It just made me mad because, ironically, I actually checked the RAM for "speed" compatibility being it's rated at 1866MHz, where I was thinking the min for a 6700K was 2133. Here though I looked at Intel, not Corsair, and thus missing the DDR3 part.

Anyway I actually think it's pretty funny now. Though it wasn't funny wasting the time tearing down a perfectly good system, only to have to put it back together

Man, $2,000 CPU and they are talking "price drops". Context is everything.

Hoping doorules has an extremely good crop this year so he can show us how one of those top puppies performs. BTW, if I remember correctly, when I got the I7 980X when it first came out, believe it was also "up there" at about $1,000.
