Intel Skylake i7 6700K CPU Review - Overclockers
    Temperatures and Power Consumption

Temperature testing doesn’t show a whole lot of difference between the comparison samples below, but that’s no surprise given they all were tested with the same water cooling system in place. Overclocking temperatures will vary greatly depending on your individual cooling scheme, but the water cooling setup on our test bench had no problem keeping the i7 6700K cool. Even using up to 1.42 V to the CPU, the maximum temperature ever recorded was about 84 °C. Below are the results under stock conditions, which show the i7 6700K running slightly cooler at idle, but a hair warmer under load compared to the other CPU samples. Different stress test utilities will yield varying numbers here, but we typically use AIDA64’s built in stress test and average the results from all four cores.
Temperature Comparison @ Stock (Normalized to 25 °C)
    i7 6700K i7 4790K i7 5775C
    Stock – Idle 27 °C 28 °C 28 °C
    Stock – Load 60 °C 59 °C 59 °C

One thing about my mainboard, if temps even think about hitting 84°C+ it throttles the Vcore, hence throttling the overclock. So I will never have any heat problems.

I put my 6700k back in the box, guess I should try and sell it...or just keep it as a spare. Love my 7700k A lot better.

Just grab an mATX MB and some RAM and you could have mini computer you could use Live Linux on and use as a spare.

Well I got 3 computers now sitting on the floor, all with Windows 10 Pro installed. I don't want another one. Got to hook one of them up soon as its my 2nd puter that I keep in the living room.

Anyway this is why I feel people should be looking more towards the tech rather than pure performance numbers. When I look at my still running Haswell system, gaming or real world performance usage, I can't say it's noticeably slower than my Kaby lake system. Benches may tell a "slightly" different story, but real word "feel", not so much. Would you notice a few frames here or there when gaming? Would you notice a few Nano seconds here or there performance wise? I seriously doubt it.

Tech wise though, especially motherboard tech (Z87 vs. Z270) is where Haswell falls short - native USB 3.1, Thunderbolt 2, native NVMe support, more PCI lanes to name a few.

Gaming wise the either system games as well as the other. Benchmark wise, it's mostly about the GPU rather than CPU. So yeah, in my opinion it's now about the motherboard tech and CPU instructions, rather than flat out performance.

All that said, I'd rather have a 2017 system with a new CPU, than a 2013 one

    My two cents.
Keep us posted on how it works for you. I just hadn't heard you talking about specific tech features you were looking at. I would go kaby lake just to support Intel Optane right now...but really just on a new build.

Another reason for choosing Kaby Lake:
    Security (vPro processors)
7th Gen Intel® Core™ vPro™ processors include a variety of hardened security features built into the silicon. Intel® Authenticate provides a robust multifactor solution that is protected in hardware, reducing users’ exposure to identity theft attacks such as phishing and screen scraping. With fingerprint, Bluetooth proximity, protected PIN, location, and facial recognition, there are plenty of options for policy customization on PCs.
Online shopping is more secure with Intel® Software Guard Extensions (Intel® SGX) and Intel® Online Connect, enabling service providers to allow personal biometric credentials to be used to make purchases online, minimizing worry about identity theft or credential loss.

Good move Worf. A few weeks of waiting for your first choice compared to years with your second choice always wondering what your first choice would have been like.

To pass the time quicker, maybe you could join dude, essenbe, slippery and me in Sniper Ghost Warrior 3. Then you could also have Lidia slapping you around to keep you focused on the prize.

Oh ya, forgot about the 1070 sale. Looks like it's card games for you, reading and rereading Zotac 1080TI reviews and trying to guess what 10K+ graphic score you will achieve in Time Spy once that puppy is in that awaiting 750D.

Not a bad way to pass the time.
