    outdated motherboard

i recently installed a samsung 850 pro 256gb into my desktop computer, which i built 7 years ago. i was disapointed at the read and write numbers [380-350]. the problem is the motherboard. it is a msi 870a g54. it has no settings in the bios from ide to ahci. my cpu is phenom ii x4 955 be. the ram is ddr3. recommendations would be appreciated. i'm thinking of replacing the motherboard. newer boards have am3+/am3, but have ahci option. please comment. i want to make sure i'm making the right decision.
    thank you pothound

This board supports your cpu & ram

    Gigabyte 990FX Gaming & has on-board M.2 SSD

    GIGABYTE - Motherboard - Socket AM3+ - GA-990FX-Gaming (rev. 1.0)

It's pricey board 135 but worth it because of it's top specs & multi cpu choice from F1 bios (F2 is just a LAN update).

Seven years old man that is a long time you are better off getting a Combination package if your going to upgrade the Board a 955BE is pretty damn old

I would look into a 990fx Mobo with a new CPU too

AMD Processor Motherboard Bundles | Micro Center
i would look at these deals might as well go full tilt and make your PC is good as it can get without going to wild of a budget

hi motherboard has 6 sata 3 connectors. the gigabyte mb looks good, i was looking at the 970a version if it will work. i have been in the bios a dozen times trying to change to ahci, and there is no option, except in raid. this version is v17.7. v17.8 will offer the ahci. i called msi to see what they had to offer, and they discontinued this old model. he sounded very discouraging. i built this only 6 years ago. technology is moving so fast. i welcome any other ideas. thank you pothound

    According to the specifications:
870A-G54 | MSI USA | Motherboard - The world leader in motherboard design

Your motherboard supports SATA III, 6 Gb/s. You can't do any better than that on SATA. That's the most up to date and current SATA there is. You say AHCI is not supported on v. 17.7 but is on v. 17.8. I find that difficult to believe that a SATA III controller would not have AHCI from the beginning, but.... Well according to this webpage:
Support For 870A-G54 | MSI USA | Motherboard - The world leader in motherboard design

The most recent version of the bios is 17.20!

So, why not just update the bios and go in and change the SATA mode to AHCI as shown in the above video and screenshots?

The 970a is still quite an old board for the am3/+ range as it still had pci slots which tells you how slow the mobo performs, I still think the Gigabyte 990FX Gaming is the best upgrade as you can use any of the AM3+ CPU'S including 9590 but super cooling would be needed.
You also get to use a M.2 SSD located on board which is theoretically X4 faster than Sata III, so could be use in a future upgrade system too !

Here is one with PCI slots

    This is my suggestion (again)
    GIGABYTE - Motherboard - Socket AM3+ - GA-990FX-Gaming (rev. 1.0)

If it were me, I would not upgrade just the motherboard only unless I was going to upgrade other components as well. There won't be much gained by upgrading the motherboard only with the same processor, graphics card (if one is being used), and SATA III SSD.

I know what you mean NavyLCDR - but I have de-clocked my FX-4170 to 2Ghz ect & seen hardly any difference in performance & it is a 4-core CPU.

I am assuming pothound is going to put the CPU & ram on a new mobo then upgrade as & when it becomes affordable, I have the Gigabyte 990FX Gaming mobo & have compared with other boards I had using a bench mark via "store" & this board benched the highest ram speed - as all boards had same ram installed.

After bios test have finished my load speed is 10 seconds before password & that is with a Kingston V400 256GB SSD, so very fast even before M.2...
