Not sure what you mean by stepping. The 5ghz OC is stable. I just don't want to pump that much voltage constantly. You only see the difference in bench marks and single threaded apps. Boot times and app start ups are the same.
You're right about benchmarks not that useful if you don't just compare results while changing something to see if it's doing any good. Check CPU-Z to see which Stepping it is. Basically it's factory quality control mark.

I also have another o/c profile at 4.9 GHz, some other time I might post a screenshot of that one, as well.

I am looking for stable everyday rather than records I am quite happy with this 4790K result: 4.7 GHz @ 1.24 V VID.

The CPUID validation, http://valid.x86.fr/p3g7qd doesn't tell you much because the frequency and voltage are screwed up for my Hero VI/4790K combo. I tried an earlier version of CPU-Z, and while the frequency/voltage were accurate, since they had changed the validation format after that version, it wouldn't register. Anyhow stable at 4 hours on Realbench.

    - Please add me.

EDIT: I can do 48-48-47-47 per core at 1.24V VID rock solid stable. So I Imagine 4.8 isn't very far off.
