    New Motherboard and rebuild

Hi. I have a 10" netbook that is good quality - it was made for schools with a rugged casing and has hardly been used. It will only run Windows 7 at the moment as it has an Atom Cedar Trail processor. It won't even run any Linux distros. As a bit of a project I'd like to use the casing and build a new mini laptop from it. The most I've ever done before is change ram, change a screen or swap hard drives.

It also has a touch screen. So where do I start please? I'm assuming I need to buy a motherboard and processor but no idea where to start with a motherboard.

Sorry, but IMO you're not going to upgrade a motherboard on a netbook/laptop - Ever.

The case and board in it were designed together, you're not going to find another board with the same cutouts and support holes to replace it, in addition, the cooling subsystem for the CPU/GPU - Same thing.

Laptops/netbooks are proprietary in this regard, unlike a desktop in which you can swap out mainboards using the same form factor.

Ok thanks! I wondered about how things would fit ha ha. So forget that idea then. It's just frustrating when I want to change the processor.

As for not running Linux, I'd suggest getting Linux Mint 13 Live DVD to try. I have a Dell Inspiron 600m with Centrino processing that can't run later versions of Linux Mint such as 17 but is just fine with 13.

Thanks! I can't remember if i tried that one. There is no graphics driver for the cedar trail unfortunately - I had bodhi linux on it for a while with a stretched screen It has Windows 7 on but that runs a bit slow on it.

Try 18, just out this week, much more support available for hardware.

    As to processor, two things:

One, you would have to open and see if you have a socket install, or it's soldered. Soldered, your done

Even if socket, you're limited by that socket type, so you then compare what's in it to what is the highest CPU that mainboard can handle (google MB model not netbook model) and go from there.

I think it's soldered . Never mind - thanks for your help. I just had an urge to pull it to bits and make it into something better ha ha.
