    How do I overclock

    Hi folks,

I've always wanted to know how to overclock, but everything online looked so complicated and different from my mobo.

So here are some photos of what the OC section in my BIOS looks like. What should I change to get the most out of my CPU.

And yes, before you ask. I do have a CPU cooler that can handle overclocking. I think I have it listed in my system specs.

EDIT: Sorry for the not-so-great photos.

Maybe these will help you out:

AMD Bulldozer and Piledriver Overclocking Guide - Asus Motherboard

AMD FX 6300 Overclock Guide (Overclock to 4.3 ghz) - YouTube

You likely won't find a guide with the exact same BIOS settings, but the above video, guide & common sense should give you the idea.
Just remember, if you don't know what it does don't change it and go slow.

Overclock.net in addition to the above ( OC .net has decent newbie guides ) they would have threads specific to your CPU ...OTOH be careful watch your temps and you can use the new Prime 95 to test for a stable OC they also have CPU stress testing instructions there .

FWIW if you're not gaming or benchmarking an OC is usually pointless and small CPU OC under ~ 300 mhz , doesn't do much of anything .

Be advised an unstable OC can corrupt Windows beyond repair ,fry your MB and or CPU be prepared with a back up or willing to do a clean install and assume some risk .

A simple modest AMD CPU OC would be raising the FSB to maybe 215 or so and see how it likes that and bringing it up slowly in small increments maybe 5 Mhz at a time I wouldn't expect to get beyond ~ 220- 230 Mhz FSB without cooling and CPU voltage and or memory mhz ,voltage & timing tweaking .....some of them won't go over 215 stable at stock voltage and memory settings . OFC on AMD BE editions you won't need to change the FSB anyway but you can for a modest simple OC but when it get too high the RAM goes wonky .

Post your CPUID validation here when you get something stable

EDIT : I see fracking4oil already linked OC .net cool !

Mmmk.. I'm mainly just trying benchmarks, but improving gaming would be nice as well.

Thanks for the links and information. :)

Okay... I followed the tutorial on YouTube you linked to and the guy made it seem like everything would be fine, so I went into my BIOS, made the changes, and attempted to reboot. Sure enough, it started its reboot...every thing was looking good... And then immediately after the Windows loading screen, I got hit with a BSOD stating, KMODE-EXCEPTION-NOT-HANDLED.

I rebooted to see if that would fix it. Nope.

So, I went into advanced settings and selected repair startup, in hopes that that would be able to fix whatever the issue was. That came back telling me it couldn't fix the issue.

So I went back into the bios, reset everything to what's called Standard Mode in my BIOS and attempted to reboot yet again. This time, it got to the loading screen and stopped. Yup, the little loading dots froze and nothing happened.

I tried rebooting again.. Same thing. So, I tried booting from my Windows installation disc.. Same thing happened to it.

What happened? Did I somehow damage my SSD and DVD drive or something? Everything else seems to be running fine as my PC is able to get to the loading screen, so my mobo or CPU couldn't have been fried and the guy in the video said he never had any problems with that overclock. But the thing that bothers me, is I reset my BIOS to default settings like I normally had them at, but yet Windows still has trouble booting.

anyways, I'm gonna head to bed now. Maybe it will fix itself over night.

    Everything's working now.

I just re-seated all of my PC's hardware and was able to boot into safemode. I ran the sfc /scannow command and it seems that was able to resolve whatever the issue was. However, after that I'm rather hesitant to even try overclocking again.

I think I've figured out the problem. After some research I discovered that my motherboard, MSI 970A-G43, is a 4 phase mobo and to overclock it's best to have a 8+2 or 6+2 phase motherboard.

Anyways, thanks for the information. I may look into upgrading my motherboard. (If they just weren't so darn expensive!)

Chuck, try leaving CPUz open and run a scan with your AV

Okay, my scan just finished. No threats found and the core speed remains the same.
