Yes that would be necessary. This review guided me away from M.2. I sometimes copy quite a lot of files.
I think M.2 and PCIe SSDs share the same characteristics. And looking at the design of intel with that giant heat sink, it only tells you how hot it can go.
But with the fan I have on top of my M.2, it is now the second coolest component in my PC on idle next to the CPU.
