Don't know where I got in my head 1.4V was lowering the voltage?
Anyway - applying more voltage - have to think about that..

    - - - Updated - - -

Anyway my computer just reset itself while I was out the room again - only seems to do it when I'm away ?
These cards are coming out and the old one is going back until I can sell them and buy more compatible ones

As far as your PC MOBO goes the max speed of RAM is 2933 MHz, assuming it is as you reference.
So why did you buy 3600 MHz RAM and expect it to work at that frequency.

The MOBO design and BIOS/UEFI limits the speed of RAM that can be used. There maybe a newer BIOS/UEFII that increases that, but maybe not.
Increasing the supply voltage to the memory modules does not change those MOBO limitations.

"Needless to say anything I do is ending up with the memory speed still down to 2133MHz whereas before it was 2666MHz
I'm going to spend a little more time and then I'm taking these RAM sticks out and putting the old one back in and leaving it the way it was when I bought it - which worked fine - before I break the thing !"

Exactly, the orginal modules were specified at 2666 MHz at 1.2v.

You really will not gain anything from installing fantasy specced RAM modules which are really 2133 MHz at 1.2v with a supposed overclock to 3600 MHz at higher supply voltages.
    See your own post #8.

In fact you loose as what you get is 2133 MHz rather than 2666 MHz of the original modules.

I asked a specialist in a Gaming PC shop and he recommended the Corsair
I went there because I thought they would keep me right and they've just sold me a random RAM card without checking if it's compatible
I won't be shopping there again

So I plugged the old 8GB RAM back in (initially didn't push it in the slot properly and it failed to boot so hopefully I haven't broken it) but anyway it seems to be working as normal again

Only this time when I got into the BIOS settings there is no Advanced option where I can tune the RAM?

Why is there no advanced options now - is this normal and just the way it's set up ie. to stop me changing the RAM settings?

Usually there's an F-key to enable the Advanced options in the BIOS.
    Generally it's the F7 key.

Also, if you're already ON the Advanced view in the BIOS... look for a setting that's probably on Auto, but needs to be set to Manual, to allow adjustment of the settings below it.

Keep in mind that this is an HP computer and may have proprietary (HP-only), BIOS settings.

As for the frequency your motherboard supports... that's not carved in stone.
For example, when you enable XMP, you are technically overclocking the RAM.

In other words, the guy at the Gaming PC shop, may have given you compatible RAM.
It might just need to be set up properly.

So this Crucial RAM that it states on their website is compatible with my machine - am I going to get better performance out of it than the Corsairs?

Well... being compatible, means that it's possible to get it to run at manufacturers specs, on your motherboard.

I've just noticed I'm only getting 2133MHz out of the old 8GB - it was 2666MHz before - and I still can't get into the Advanced settings in the BIOS !
When do I press F7 to get that ?

    - - - Updated - - -

You know what this has just defaulted to the settings that were applied to the previous RAM cards and I can't get into the Advanced settings now to change it !
What an absolute pain in the tits I wish I'd never bothered trying to upgrade my frigging ram !

    - - - Updated - - -

Now the clocks off - I tried clicking on something and it was to change the clock timing or something and now it's off - I'm never doing any under the hood stuff ever again !

    - - - Updated - - -

I fixed the time fairly easily then
But what am I supposed to do with this situation with being apparently locked out of the Advanced settings and stuck on the previous default settings for the previous RAM - reset the BIOS or something ?

    - - - Updated - - -

What if I put the old RAM back in and set the Advanced settings to Default and when I plug the old one back in it might default to the original settings ?
This is absolutely ridiculous - buy a computer with slots to upgrade only to find the firmware is set so as not only to not allow this but screw up any options to go back to the original set up - great work there HP - last machine I ever buy from that company !

    - - - Updated - - -

OK finally got there in the end by exiting the Advanced settings and choosing the option to set it back to the default settings - this appears to be the only options available to set the original RAM
Wasn't sure what that was going to do but I followed a YouTube tutorial and took a punt on it and I'm now back to the original RAM speed
I'm not not so sure about upgrading again - I've got an offer of £50 on the Corsairs so I'll decide tomorrow if I want to order the Crucials

That all went fast then - sold the Corsairs for £60 - minus eBay fees that just about covers the cost of these new Crucials which should arrive tomorrow and they were £7 cheaper than they were listed yesterday !

As it says "Intel XMP2.0" on the listing does that mean I just select XMP2 in the Bios or do I still have to match the timing settings ?

You won't know for sure until you try.
The Crucial RAM will work on your motherboard, but you just have to try the XMP.

Nothing I could do could get the DOCP (XMP) to work on my board.
I had to set the RAM freq., timings and voltage... manually.

Should I use CPU-Z and do it manually before trying the default XMP options?

    I would "try" XMP.
If it doesn't work properly, then do things manually.
