I have also just upgraded one of my Toshiba Satellite's from 32 bit to 64 bit......with 4gb of RAM it is quite fast.....just a quick question, is it correct that it doesn't matter how much extra RAM you add to a 32bit system ? as it will only use a set amount anyway.......whereas a 64bit system will use ALL the available RAM ........
When reading about RAM limits with 32-bit OS it usually will say that Windows can't display the full 4GB RAM, usually about 3.5GB or so. I've not seen a 32-bit install fail to work just because it had too much RAM on the motherboard. Makes me wonder if a more sophisticated testing method would reveal more.

I don't mean to hijack the OP's thread, but this is what happened to me......I purchased 4gb of RAM and installed it into a 32 bit machine, along with the original 2gb of RAM......then I read somewhere that any more than 4gb, in a 32bit machine was a waste......so I removed the original 2gb of RAM and put it into another Toshiba, different model number, but surprisingly it fitted....so I now have two machines with 4gb of RAM, running W10 64 bit.......and both are fine, and quite fast.....

Yeah why on earth can't I replace my carburettor engine with a fuel injected engine in my Trabant?

A computer with 4 G will run better with 32Bits than with 64Bits

......Presumably the way forwards is to add more RAM then ?........

Probably true but I have a 2-mo. old Notebook with 4GB running Win11 Home just fine. This Notebook was cheap at $179USD but also included Microsoft 365 1-year subscription. Win11 is only 64-bit, no 32-bit although it seems able to run the same programs as Win10. Usually added programs can make a bigger difference

If you use only one stick (8G) it will run in single channel mode. If you install with 4g+4G it will run in dual channel mode (much faster).
If your MB has 4 slots you can use (4+2)G in one channel and (4+2)G in the second channel, if all memory sticks are the same brand and model. (Mixing brands, models isn't recommended as they will have different speeds and latency)
    Thanks

    to update my original post:

I managed to upgrade my older 2x4 GB DDR3 RAM to 16 GB ( 2x8GB).. The modules went in OK, but the BIOS only shows 8 GB and the SPECCY Utility shows the RAM is running in single channel. Why not on double channel as previously?

    Thanks

Can't the BIOS setting be changed to show dual-channel? The only time I've seen 2 modules not run as dual was when the modules weren't identical, were mismatched.

When installing or removing memory sticks, remove the power cord from the outlet.

Test with one stick and then the other one on its slot. Maybe one stick is damaged or not well inserted.
