    DDR3 vs DDR4

I have a 6-7 year old Dell Latitude laptop with only one DIMM slot. I'm running Windows 10 Pro 22H2.

It has an 8GB stick. I would like to upgrade it to 16GB, but I'm having trouble finding a 16GB DDR3 stick
    Lots of DDR4, though.

    So, my question is;
Can DDR4 be used in place of DDR3 in this laptop?

    Latitude 5500
    Intel(R) Pentium(R) CPU N3540 @ 2.16GHz 2.16 GHz

I have found DDR3 16GB at outrageous prices.
However, since posting the OP, I did find a deal on one at eBay.
Regular at $162.+, discount from Capital One dropped it to $91.81 W/tax, free shipping.
    Delivery between 05/04 & 05/08.

But, still the question does stand.....Is DDR4 viable in this device?

    Thanks, SWI2.
DDR4 is a lot cheaper, though.
Could have got a single-stick 32GB for less than I paid for the DDR3 16GB.
    Go figure.

    Adios.

"Can DDR4 be used in place of DDR3 in this laptop?"

    No, definitely not.

You can fairly easily find DDR 3 RAM modules up to 8 GB.

The CPU in your Laptop will only take 8 GB total anyway.

Prices are market lead which means older DDR 3 is increasing in prices due to low demand. I upgraded my old Laptop several years ago when DDR 3 was pretty much at lowest prices.

Are you sure about your Dell model number? According to Dell the Latitude 5500 has totally different specs than you mention. The Dell Latitude has two RAM slots using DDR4. The CPU is even different than yours.

    Closer is this model:
    Dell Latitude 3150
    CPU: Intel Pentium CPU N3540 @ 2.16GHz
    Memory connector: One SODIMM slot
Memory capacity: 2 GB, 4 GB, and 8 GB
    Memory type: 1333 MHz DDR3L
