I would prefer the s for supposedly lower power consumption. I actually still have a i5-3570s which is similar just clocked slightly higher than the i5-3470s. The s versions have 65w tdp. The non s have 95w tdp.

    Intel Core i5-3570S @ 3.10GHz vs Intel Core i5-3470S @ 2.90GHz vs Intel Core i5-3550S @ 3.00GHz [cpubenchmark.net] by PassMark Software

they all score more than double on cpumark compared to your i3.

Quick up date, post arrived this morning and in it was a very tatty parcel containing my i5-3550s which was purchased from CEX and went missing. Contacted CEX and explained that the parcel has arrived, and as they have already refunded said "thanks for letting us know just keep it"

Strange this is we don't have post on a Sunday?

So over the next couple of days I will attempt to install in... Any suggestion going forward

    Asus P8H61-M PRO

With the original Core i3-3240T boot the computer and go into the BIOS. Verify the version of the BIOS.
The i5-3550 requires at least version 3705. If it is not at least that version then you need to update the BIOS.
Note if you have to update the BIOS anyways it is better to update to the latest version 4802.

Core i3-3240T (2.9G,L3:3M,iGPU,2C,rev.L1) Requires BIOS 3703 or higher
Core i3-3240T (2.9G,L3:3M,iGPU,2C,rev.P0) Requires BIOS 4502 or higher
Core i5-2500 (3.3G,L3:6M,iGPU,4C,rev.D2) Requires BIOS 0219 or higher
Core i5-3550 (3.3G,L3:6M,iGPU,4C,VT-d,77W,rev.E1) Requires BIOS 3705 or higher

    BIOS
    Version 0219 2011/03/09 Release
    Version 3703 2012/03/05
    Version 3705 2012/03/13
    Version 4502 2012/08/10
    Version 4802 2014/05/22 Latest

    Update
    Bios: 0704
    CPU: i3-3240t 2.90
    Memory: 16384 DDR3 1600MHZ

So it looks like the bios is slightly out of date, what next...

Just checked the website and it states that the latest bios is 4802

    P8H61-M PRO BIOS 4802
    Version 4802
    3.06 MB
    2014/05/22
    Improve system stability.

Can I upgrade from 0704 to 4802 in one go, or should I do it slowly. The strange thing is I don't see a 0704 in the bios list?

    Yes just install 4802

just make sure you have the right variant there was a few of those models a standard one, pro one and possible an LE i think but they should have the same bios you would think

Just had a look none of them have a 0704 the standard model has a 0702 and 4702?

    standard

    pro
    P8H61-M PRO - Support

    LE
    P8H61-M LE/USB3 - Support

Strange because the first revision for a bios download will be the one that came out when the motherboards first were made and they go back to 02xx in this case, the one you have is not on there unless it was a custom one flash on there by the previous owner.

found it 0704 is on revision 2.0 of the LE motherboard, just make sure you have the right model you can see it in the bios and it will be printed on the motherboard too, if you bought this used who ever owned it previously might of put the wrong one on, or you are looking at the wrong variant.

They will all share the same bios but some variants will have different support etc. So there is no point putting an LE flash on a pro model for example

    Motherboard P8H61-M PRO

I have double checked and it is showing Bios 0704, so not sure where this has come from... Or what to update it with as this is not a correct bios?

It's not unusual for boards to be shipped with Bios versions not listed, seen this many times.
