    Header Extension Cable Advice\Identification Please

Just wondering if you can confirm what cables that I need, and if anyone has figured out the lengths, maybe you have a similar set up to get that would be great, as measuring it out isn't easy when you're as ill as I am and measuring them.

I have an Asus P8Z68Z Deluxe motherboard, and a Multi Card Reader (several types in 1) plus more different ones, I have a Silverstone case (TJ09 IIRC) which means the distance between the board and reader is near double than that of smaller cases, I also have a couple of other leads which I will breakdown, screenshots attached are for added clarity.

Multi Card Reader, it has 3 leads, 1 x USB and 2 Sata, mounted in the front panel; There is already power for the basic parts of this (lights usage etc), but I believe the Sata leads are for eSata, and the power source for this(?), this is new ground for me, but it will help me test other drives without having to open the PC etc, as it's not easy for me now, the thing is I only have 6 Sata ports on the board, and they are fully used if I get a replacement drive soon, not sure if that's an issue or not.

Top of case Analogue Flap\Panel (AAFP?), 2 x USB, 1 x Firewire, and Audio Jacks in\out, as you will see in the actual board picture, they are very tight on fitting, so I wanted to ease that if I can.
Numbers 17 and 18 on the Motherboard attachment.

And a USB3 Header Option, can't say I ever noticed it prior, Number 7 on the Motherboard attachment.
I know what USB3 is, but I can't picture what a connection would benefit it, except maybe another front Panel Port, which is my guess for it's use, just want to check that there is no better use for it.

Finally does anyone have any Sata lead suggestions?
I'm looking for strong performers, longer than standard ones (a good half as much more than standard ones), and able to be routed in bulk (talking say a dozen leads), albeit half being the Sata power for the drives (all 8), 2 x SSD in raid0, 2 x mass storage, and 3 x VelociRaptor's in Raid0 and DVD writer, power is plentiful I have an XFX 750w modular PSU, but I do want to try and tidy he cables more, but being so short it's not possible, and all current leads are standard lengths I would say, so any pointers would be great.

This sounds like very specific requirements so much so that you would need to work this out yourself. Cables usually come in 500mm increments so 500mm, 1m, 1.5m , 2m etc they do come outside these size but these sizes are common.

just measure how long you think the cable is going to need to be and then round up or down to the closest size.

Your case is also not cable management friendly as i can see there is no opening into the back side of the case. Which is the whole premise of this you are wanting to tidy up the cables?

You will still be able to make it nicer looking but you will have to plan around this more as usually you are going to tie cables in bunches and usually anchor them to a main areas of cable flow so it looks nicer.

Yes, I appreciate the lengths would be for me to work out, my comment there was purely incase someone had a similar sort of set up and had found there were certain cables better than standard cables and what lengths they found worked best, so I'm not expecting miracles, it's more about the most effective cable to use more than length if you follow.

The main aim for tidying the cables is so the bottom of the case is clear as much as is possible tugging them over to the back edge kind of thing (maybe some shrink sleeving?), but the lengths are not enough to do that with most of them, hence the extension leads required, and the card reader is nowhere near close enough.

So don't worry about the lengths directly, as you said that's down to me, I just wondered what others may have found good for them, but it's more the actual name of the cable, the better makes, more adaptable in tight areas kind of points, I've been too ill too long to get my head around these varied terms to look for (M\F and any other term I may not know these days.

It's been many years since I built it, so with my health I've forgotten a lot), more so the eSata leads and where too connect that makes me wonder, no matter what anyone says obviously it's what I get than what is said directly here, just hoping for generalised pointers mostly based on the above if that makes sense?

    Thanks for the reply

Sata like most standards are pretty standardized hence why we call then standards Sata cables especially are a good reflection of this in terms that they don't vary between manufactures very much. you will get some that are a bit more rugged than others but overall they are pretty similar and there is only so many ways you can paint a cat.

You might be able to find some braided ones somewhere but its not going to effect anything really other than aesthetics and will cost more simply because they look "cooler".

I guess outside of that look for ones that have a right angle on one end so that way you have multiple mounting options because sometimes those right angles are handy depending on what you are plugging into.

Not really sure what you mean here? You have two USB 2.0 headers and number 7 is USB 3 you cannot picture what its for? its for USB 3 the blue USB ports.

in one of the images you have one USB header 2.0 slot populated and that connector has blue wires assuming these blue wire mean 3.0 so you need to make sure that this is not USB 3 Connector as you are short changing your speed by a lot if this is the case just look at the USB plugs on the actual case where that connector corresponds to if they are blue they are 3.0 not 2.0.

The arrows to the others cables in the bottom left of the picture not sure what the problem is here as you never described it.

Sorry for being so slow, been pretty bad lately so not with it as such, as to Sata leads that's fine, I just didn't know if there was one far superior to others so to speak, so if there is no real difference then that's as much as I need there, I have never gone for cool, just performance.

The USB3 header on the motherboard is obviously USB3 usage, what I am struggling with is where it would serve, as the board has USB3 ports on the rear of the system, so from this I'm guessing I'm overthinking things, and it's probably the most obvious use of say adding a front USB3 panel or similar lol, sorry I said I was out of it lately.

The arrows were the case top flap leads for USB and Firewire I think it is, they were showing how tight they are, and I was looking for the extension leads so I can take the strain off of them, and get the board area clear of them, and I didn't know if there are any special needs here, so I guess not from this, Thanks for the replies, I'll just plod on and get cables then, Thanks again.
