But, if the HD graphics is disabled, will it revert to Basic Display adapter or go onto the nvidia?
Any device that you don't plan to use should be disabled in the BIOS, not from Device Manager so that Windows don't even know it exists. Your BIOS should have a section called: Intergrated Peripheral devices where you can disable devices such as: Audio, Video, serial port etc...

As said above, In your BIOS you have settings to disable the IGPU and set it to PCI or peg depending on how your BIOS shows it. Here is how it shows in my BIOS to give you an idea of what I mean.

So, looking at your screenshot, the Initiate Graphics Adapter is your video card, and the IGO Multi-monitor is the onboard graphics that comes with the motherboard. And by disabling the onboard graphics, the graphics card really does all of the work. Seems worth a try.

I just want to be sure I am clear about this before jumping into the BIOS.
    Thanks

Yes, that is correct. Your BIOS may look a little different. If you are unsure post a screenshot and we can help.

Dude just posted that this should be done in the BIOS. Look around for his thread.

You could use much better GPU in that setup, even an i3 would be enough to use that GPU to it's fullest.

When the onboard graphics is disabled it will look for a discreet PCI-E 16x and use that instead. In most motherboards the default is to automatically disable the onboard graphics if a discreet card is present. Of course you have the option through BIOS to enable it and use it in dual monitor setup. If you do, make sure the PCI-E is the primary (boot) display.
