Upgrading ram - Changing motherboard (Lga 1150)

    Hi

I would like to change motherboards and upgrade ram from current 8gb to 32gb (ddr3).

However the options in finding motherboards/ram are very limited for this socket (lga 1150).

I'm looking for a high end Asus motherboard. This board has a sound issue.

I would settle for a fully functioning Msi gaming 5 board too.

I have not used this system in a long while but will be using again soon. The last time when casually browsing, things were not as smooth as used to be.

    Moving on

The Asus Sabertooth Z87 has sparked my interested which I saw on ebay and am thinking of buying that.

I read there is a Sabertooth Z97 but not sure if I can find that.

I would like to hear your thoughts. Please provide links if you stumble across any.

    Thanks.

    @TechSeven

I found this... FOR ASUS ROG MAXIMUS VII HERO Motherboard M7H LGA 1150 Intel Z97 Tested | eBay

But I would just get a new motherboard, CPU and RAM

    Hey

I still have an Asus Z87 running nicely since 2013, even better now more Windows skills, and feel no reason to upgrade yet.
Since i stopped my PC car sim racing a few years back, dont seem to play games at all these days.
Raced PC car sims for 15 years, which is pretty hardcore. By the end of about 2015, i had an amazing home made setup, with 3 x 32" HDTVs, which were all different screens, cleverly levelled off and colour matched
I dont think i'll ever play anything as good as that in my life again, i mean that. Setup n arf i tell ya. Took some handy DIY skills to hide the PC inside a modified coffee table hehe.

Anyways my old fat AMD R9270's are back in their boxes with me now happily running my old Nvidia GT630 2GB ddr3. It fanless, love it
She can still easily run 2 TV's, 32" and a 50" curved. Really nice and crisp with the Modern Nvidia drivers.
Ive changed alot these days and go for the energy saving ways.
With the old Z87 and i5 4670K, running all the bios C-States, which are originally disabled by default. Chip was at 26 degrees lastnight, on air.

The amazing thing about the Z87 for me, was the amount of memory it supported all the way back then.
If you can do slow upgrades over time, thats the best way.

This is the DDR3 memory which i started with. Bought it in 2010 for a cheap G41 skt775 which supported it.

I started with 2x4GB once i got the Asus Z87. Then a few years later found another matched pair, same Ver8.16. 16GB was plenty for me. In a way it still is.

    CORSAIR XMS3 CMX8GX3M2B1600C9 Ver8.16.
16GB 4X4GB 9-9-9-24 at 1.5v. They easily run at 1866MHz, but the gains wernt worth the bother, so i left them at 1600. Power saving.

To increase my ram above 16GB, i decided to try a couple of cheaper Kingston 8GB sticks as a slow upgrade to 32GB.
Well worth it and so easy to obtain. Comes in 8GB single sticks.

    KINGSTON KVR1333D3N9H/8G 1.5V
32GB 4X8GB. Can be individually purchased over the course of time, to suit your budget.

Stock is 1333MHz at 9-9-9-24 at 1.5V. But this stuff will happily run at 1600Mhz 9-9-9-24, same as my Corsair XMS3 did.
If it wont run at 1600, no matter. 32GB at 1333Mhz with slightly lower timings isnt that much slower than 1600 and nothing to be ashamed of.
Some people in the world are only just buying ddr2 and early C2 Quads's, because thats all they can afford. These are the people who manage to scrape every last drop out of the hardware and i love it

Okies then. Ive made a list for you.
This is the 32GB modules from the support list in the Asus Z87 manual. Added a few 16GB sets in here too, if you decided you wanted to upgrade to 32GB at a later date.
The Z87 allows so many dividers for the ram at either 100 or 133. Lets start with the highest frequencies, highest voltages and the highest latencies.
Working our way down to poverty spec 1333 haha

Hope this message is of some help.

Haswell, best i5 i7 range they ever did. My machine is almost 10 years old and it'll whip a modern system full of junk controlled by Microsoft.

    Peace

    Thanks for the information.
    .
I have a z97 sabertooth mark now. Up and running since yesterday.

I found a link to some cheap patriot ram. I upgraded from 8gb to 16gg. Will get more soon.

Would i have to update any ram settings in the bios or anywhere else?

    My new ram specs
    Capacity: 16GB (2 x 8GB) Kit
    Frequency: PC3-12800 (1600MHz)
    Timings: 9-9-9-24
    Voltage: 1.5 Volts

Most times modern BIOSes will automatically pick up the newly installed RAM and also set the Dual-channel when changing from a single model to dual or more modules. Both of my Win11 Desktops [one new and one rehabbed] did that when going from 8GB to 16GB and have only 2 slots, they will take larger modules but are sufficient for my needs. I haven't experienced whether running 2 modules plus one module, i.e. 6GB, 12GB, 20GB, etc. [multiples of 4GB or 2GB] will work the same.

On the motherboard, to the right hand side of the memory slots, you'll see a button that says 'MemOK'.
When installing fresh ram sticks, i always use this button. It should load up the defaults and test the settings.
You'll see a red LED next to the MemOK button. It'll flash if settings are wrong. If this is the case, press and hold the MemOK button for about 2 seconds, or until the machine briefly powers off and restarts again.

This is also a good option process for 4 sticks of ram.
Start with the first matched pair. Press MemOK. Once booted to bios then turn machine off again.
Next only install the 3rd stick of ram and machine should boot up again. Turn off. Now install last stick of ram. Machine should boot. If it doesnt, use the MemOK button to refresh.
