There should be a release on end of memory slot. Some boards have just one and others have one on each end

As @Phone Man said... there's usually a clip at the top of each RAM slot (sometimes at top and bottom).
You push the clip down and away from the RAM stick and it levers the RAM stick upwards.
Don't go all superman on those clips... they're only plastic.

Also, when inserting RAM into the slots, make note of where the notch is, on the bottom of the RAM stick.
They only go in one way.
With the clip(s) opened, slowly but firmly, push down on the RAM stick, and that will make the clip(s), close, all by them selves. When the clip(s) close, the RAM is fully seated.

I sort of expected a clip but couldn't see one. I'll check later - I don't think I need to take it out now anyway..

Ok then... all this stuff is compatible..

    Memory RAM & SSD Upgrades | hp - compaq | hp omen 25l series | OMEN 25L GT11-0012na | Crucial.com

And I should have mentioned it earlier, but on PCPartpicker, at the top right, you can choose any country you want...
Then just search PCPartpicker for the model of RAM you want. Like this...

    Crucial Ballistix 32 GB (2 x 16 GB) DDR4-3200 CL16 Memory (BL2K16G32C16U4B) - PCPartPicker

That will get you started... just scroll down the list at that Crucial link, and look at all the RAM that has heatsinks (heat spreaders).
You want to find a matched set with the highest frequency and lowest CAS latency, that are compatible.
Buying matched sets, is better than buying two single sticks. More stable, less problems.

Also try to find a set of RAM that has TWO sticks, for however much total RAM you want. If you want 32GB total, get 2x16GB set. If you want 16GB, get 2x8GB set... etc.

Ballistix good then? I guess by the name they sound like they are. Might be inclined to go for the same, but if there are any good deals on 16GB or 32GB then that could work too maybe - is it bad to mix and match (size or model)?

Yeah, Crucial is a great company, they've been making RAM since the beginning.

And see what I wrote under those PCPartpicker links.

NEVER mix and match. Always buy sets. Everything your computer does, goes through the RAM.
You want the RAM to be super stable.

I recommend staying away from 4 stick sets.
Running RAM is dual channel is faster than in single channel.
The more sticks in a set, the harder it is to keep stable.
You need a minimum of two sticks to run in dual channel.

So as I said... whatever the total amount of RAM you want... is... look for a two stick SET that adds up to that total.

If I were you, I'd look for 16GB or 32GB sets, that are 3200Mhz, with a CAS latency of 16.

    @STU9000

Now that we know the exact model of your computer, we can find all this useful information...

    https://support.hp.com/rs-en/document/c06638047

    Like this stuff...

    Memory upgrade information

Dual channel (2 DIMMs per channel) memory architecture
    Four DDR4 UDIMM (288-pin) sockets
    Supports up to PC4-23400 (DDR4-2933)
Supports 8 GB and 16 GB DDR4 UDIMMs

So don't go higher than 3200Mhz RAM

They are out of stock at £85 in the UK

They have them in stock at this link, click the add to cart button. That looks a reasonable price $118 for 2x16gb

Not in a rush. Cheers for all the advice, really helpful.

2x16GB sounds like the mutt's nuts

And then I can maybe use my old 8GB Ram card to rebuild my crappy 5 year old Lenovo with a new motherboard - one that isn't a dusty old cow pancake
