I did use a tester on it for all it's outputs being used (modular unit), it passed on the tester itself, no issues noted when trying to run the mainboard on it outside the case. Should I pull it and try something else to check it?
Thanks a lot for the feedback gentlemen , very helpful . Yeah , i was talking more along the lines of a laptop and buying a new one every few versions of Windows sounds like a good rule of thumb .
Most people who bought a laptop with Win 7 on it seem to be in good shape with Win 10 . It sounds like the big towers were much more popular in the past than they are these days , ultimate expandability is a great feature but manufacturers have pushed "mini towers" and "all in ones" the last few years.

Tried another core I7-920 on it, FF all the way, even with another stick from another system.
EVGA after one week, doesn't have a direct replacement for my x58 classified, so I was offered an X99 or Z97 board, and I chose the Z97 (can still try my existing DDR3 ram with it).
awaiting shipping, which is ok, because I'll have to scratch up the funds for a Core i7 LGA1150 CPU.
Making due with my laptop and a acer small form factor PC for the moment. But at least I hope that when I get a CPU into it it boots! :)

Time for an update ...
I finally had $$$ to grab a I7-4790K 4.0Ghz CPU ...
Last night, with the components on the MB tray on a box, I put it together:
New CPU
EVGA Z97 Classified (given to me as replacement)
EVGA GeForce GTX 960 2GB SSC (given to me as replacement)
Two of my three Corsair DD3 1600 DIMMS (New board is dual channel, not three, one in slot 1 and one in slot 3)
Connected everything and booted.
Got into Bios, damn that graphical stuff is so much nicer than the old style, got memory set from the RAM itself, set a couple of other things and booted.
Into windows 10 ok! (It's a legacy boot, but I'm not concerned about that vs UEFI, if I ever completely wipe, then I'll switch modes)
As I suspected though, win 10 treated the new MB, etc. as a new system (Duh!) and deactivated.
I tested the system anyway, clearing out the old drivers and installing for new gear, though win 10 did an outstanding job of driver install for the new system stuff on its own.
So, the conundrum, clean install, or ... ?
Well, since it died shortly after I initially upgraded it to 10, I decided to take it back to 7, and it did it.
I've reactivated my 7 ultimate install with my key, and I have a working win 7 system at present.
Things left to do;
Drivers 7 wouldn't find, new network controllers, etc. I have to grab them online and then install/setup.
Test.
Break it down and then:
Decide on cooler.... Right now the stock cooler is on it. I have a coolermaster V8, which I got the new backplate for the LGA1150, and I'm looking at how to implement, or whether or not to do so, it is large, and though I don't believe I'll have issues, I'm looking at how that sits with the backplate and the MB tray, once sorted out, I can then place in case and re-route wiring.
Or just go with the stock intel cooler (yuk, but on already, etc.) I don't plan on OC'ing this yet, so 4.0 is pretty nice coming from a 920 running at 3.2 ...
After it's back in the Thermotake Shark, and I have it as I like it, I figure I can then re-run the upgrade to 10, it will be activated and I'll be set on the new hardware.
Lastly a question, have the triple pack corsair TR3X6G1600C8D pack.
As I indicated the new Z97 board is dual channel, only 4 slots, using 1 and 3 right now, anyone think I can get another single DIMM from Corsair and then use four? I would think so, and may be cheaper than re-purchasing a new set of four .... I'm awaiting an answer from Corsair, just wanted feedback, I'm not hurting though, only went from 6GB to 4Gb because of this (Unless I can run 1 and 2, and a single in three, but I've been told not, because one would be single channel, if I'm wrong, I'd be happy to be re-educated on the setup thanks!)

Don't worry about single/dual channel unless you are using IGPU, you won't see any benefits. It's better to have more RAM than fast RAM.
Well, still no response from corsair, however I found on ebay I can get another stick of what I was using for $12. If I'm inclined to populate all four for the moment.
I'd never mix modules, and as far as batches, I'd trust Corsair modules in the dominator series far more than anything else ... would get one that matches the three I have for timing, etc.

It was not a good day, let's just say we all make mistakes from time to time, I've been doing builds for a while, anyways ...
Damaged my board trying the V8 cooler before placing into case, re-running outside it spewed out code 55 before I took off and discovered the damage.
In a way, luckily, I hadn't bought this board, it was an RMA replacement - So I learned my lesson as my new one that I did pay for arrives Thursday ...
Will get it all back together and into the case before a re-occurrence of stupid happens :)
Today the new board arrives, I'll setup on the MB tray and run as before, fingers crossed, but I figure I did this to myself, it should boot up provided the new board is ok.
I've had my thermotake shark case for the last 4-5 years, now that I'm looking at trying to put this back together, I was thinking upgrade tot eh case, something similar, but modern (easier wiring access, power supply to the bottom, filters for everything, etc.)
So, if the new rig runs on the box as before, I'm thinking of powering it down and grabbing a:

Thoughts? I don't need HDD tray customization (Basically looks the same as my shark just that it has plenty of room around the MB area now for the wiring (with rubber grommets, etc. where I dont have that now, including more right side lid space, etc.)
$139 right now on amazon, I thought it to be a worthy successor.
