OK then , apparently it wasn't a catastrophic death , thats good news. I will change my diagnosis to seriously injured but barely and on life support .

Yeah, that works for me ... it's the resurrection part that awaits. no worries.

Replacement CPU arrived today, I may hold off until Friday night to install with nothing else but the board and its cooler and power it up to see what I get, then add RAM, etc. I'm hopeful, but if I get anything other than a boot, then I'm going to have the Mainboard RMA'd ...

The boards I've worked with did nothing but give beeps until at least one RAM module was installed, haven't tried with boards of the last couple of years.

Ok, no ram installed - FF.

Same with any module installed.

I know the ram is good, I've tested, and the power supply as well, now using another i7-920.

Tests were conducted out of the case with it on cardboard.

Time for a new MB ...

Is this replacing the Motherboard and CPU stuff really only done with desktops or is this common with all computers ? Probably cheaper than buying a whole new system.

Well, there's really only desktops and Notebooks/Laptops and Yes, it can be done with both types. Desktops come in 2 or 3 styles, either a full tower, an SFF tower or UltraSFF tower, maybe a traditional case that lays flat on a desk. It's usually cheaper with desktops than with Notebooks as there's more variety/choices in what to use. An issue with desktops is whether a motherboard is compatible with a CPU and/or RAM/Memory modules, tend to go out of production in a relatively short time. The motherboards for Notebooks are precision-fit for the case which can make obtaining a replacement somewhat more expensive. The bottom line for both types is whether its cost-effective to replace parts but still have an out-of-warranty machine [new parts themselves will usually have a warranty]. I tell clients that if a Notebook is more than a couple versions of Windows old it usually is better to just get a new one, there's more leeway with desktops. SFF = Small Form Factor, very compact case but not much can be added to it.

For Fredc; in my case, this was an enthusiast mainboard and components, so the fact that EVGA give me the option after testing to advance RMA a new part is terrific. (I really hope this solves it and the new cpu/mb/ram will boot up, I'd like my system back hehehe).

I'd agree with Berton, but if a lappy then you're really limited to replacing same items, for a tower case like have (Thermotake Shark) I can either take the RMA, decide on several different form factor mainboards and go differently, etc.

$$$ is my limiting factor here, like anyone else. So first getting the RMA and getting it running again before having to spend to get a whole new mainboard (and processor to go with it, for the socket will have changed, possibly ram as well) is an easy enough decision for me.

Been living on my laptop so far, but missing my gaming rig in which I currently play KSP :)

The Advance RMA has been processed, awaiting shipping, so it will be this week.

Now I'm faced with that standard quandary; setup the replacement mainboard on a non conductive surface, and decide which CPU to try in it first, etc. :)

So what was the brand of the PSU in that computer that died?
