    What a bummer

I finally had my main system on 10, loving it, etc.

    and it dies.

6 years strong, it died yesterday afternoon whilst playing Kerbal space, and rebooting it is throwing codes.

It's an EVGA x58 Classified using a core i7-920 (cooler master V8 cooler) with 6GB corsair RAM (3x2GB) with a EVGA GTX 295 card.

Video of post: http://www.dynamicflight.com/dl/EVGA Boot Up.mp4

notes; two issues at hand: (not looking for a solution here, but you never know who's reading and capabilities)

The 295's fan no longer powers on on power on of the system, green light on the card though. I've kept it very clean over 6 years, not sure when that occurred, but that has to be addressed after the following below.

The board when booting gives me an F3 F^ cycle, then a couple other codes, a look online tells me that it is not finding the RAM. I took all ram out and disconnected all other sata lines, etc. and I STILL get the F3 F6 cycling, which some have indicated means the memory controller on the processor itself has bit it.

None of the codes have anything to do with the video card, it doesn't get that far in post to get there ...

I've removed the CPU and replaced, same thing, but don't think it was jostled by the cooler after being good for 6 years, My OC was only to 3Ghz, not stressful at all on it, but I'll take the hit if that is the determination.

So, my thought process here is I get a cycling F3 F6 when no ram exists at all on it, and I'm going to get a refurb i7-950 to try in the board (I went with the 920 figuring to save and could safely OC to the 3.0 that the 950 runs natively) as I can get those for like $60 certified and warrantied. I don't believe all my ram modules decided to go bad at the same time.

If placed in the board and I no longer get the F3 F6 cycle, then I could go ahead and turn my attention to the GTX 295.

My plan there is to see if I have another rig I can try it in, if the fan doesn't come on there either, then RMA it goes.

    Does this sound valid?

My board, and the video card are still covered by the limited LT warranty at EVGA, I'm working with them as well, but like to bounce off the community.

Luckily, my data is safe, my primary OS drive had windows and some programs, data and other storage was on two additional drives, which can be hooked up internally or externally if needed, depending on what I do next.

Its a bit depressing, as zero issues since I assembled it in 2009 and configured it, but I got my moneys worth out of it, and I don't think I have to trash it just yet either being that both components may be covered.

I would follow the "How to Debug a Motherboard" steps to troubleshoot.

MB ram & Graphics card playing up, at exactly the same time, Built in 2009,

Have you tried changing the PSU?, could be it is just getting out and out of spec, ie supplying unreliable Voltage/current (if possible borrowing one to test, or a multimeter to check V/A)

    Hi Aramil,

Had thought of that, however, the GTX 295 has a power led, if the slot or pcie extra inputs were not up to snuff, it would be red.

I haven't yet tested the ram in another board, as I don't have one, but the indications of it still looking when no ram is installed leads to the cpu.

This is a bummer. I suspect memory controller as you say you don't think all the memory modules went bad together. If you get the 950 perhaps all will be well again. I run an i7 920 as well also built in 2009 and hope the memory controller is not prone to failure although I've not run across anything in Net searches. There were, you probably know, some problems with initial builds where people did not properly seat the CPU which resulted in some memory not being recognized. Hope you get the 950 and that resolves the problem.

Video card coming today, not going to mess with it until I try out a replacement CPU without RAM on the board to check that. If I need a board, that too can be advanced RMA'd to me by EVGA (They really do have great HW support)

Yes they do, best of luck to you. It could have been far worse.

It could ? Computer crapped out , expired, kicked the bucket , a fatality occurred , will be listed in the obituaries tomorrow morning , how can it be worse ?

Well, i trust you , i suppose it could be worse , i don't know about this stuff so time for me to go .

Yes, it could be worse; It did not kick the bucket, it threw out error codes and the hard drives are still safe and I am very surprised that after 6 years he still was anything under warranty.

I don't think the problem is windows 10. Playing games stresses all the hardware, cooling, cpu, gpu, memory, hard drives, powers supply, etc. Hope the new cpu solves the problem for you.

Thanks, Yeah, its far from dead, one main OS drive, the other two 1Tb's are data only, can easily pop them out to any other system in a heartbeat, nothing has been lost here :)

EVGA traded me up to a 2Gb GTX 960 ! (ddr5 baby ... ummm) (since the 295 no longer made).
Grabbed the new drivers for x64 10 ...

EVGA is a limited lifetime warranty if you register the stuff.

So now i'm just waiting on the replacement CPU. Will install and check the MB without ram to see if I get the same error flipping, or a straight to F7, which would be what I want - or the board will be RMA'd at that point.

If good, then I'll add the corsair's back on it and then put in the GTX, because I don't want to take the chance with it until I know what's going on MB wise (that or the processor) boot to 10 and let it lull over the new card. If that occurs I should be good because all that will have changed on 10 is the video card, same board - activation intact.

If I have to RMA the board, then it would be a call to MS.

I won't be getting to this this week, going on a late vacation cruise, back on the 14th, should know by end of that week.

Thanks for the support gang! :)
