I have been going with a pea sized blob and spread it out. I probably worry too much about even coverage.

I do it like a manufactuer would, which is use the spreader that normally comes with your paste to coat the whole surface I mean with an OEM heatsink they give you an evenly spread coat of paste so it covers the whole of the CPU you are using.

All those other ways risk a non-even spreading coat of thermal paste unless you pull it back off then spread the missing bits !

The main issue to watch for is not having airspaces which is why the pea size or pencil eraser size works and let the pressure of the heatsink when clamped down do the spreading, have never had a problem since getting hired in a shop in '94 and building computers on order.

Well my system is all back together and clean as a whistle. I went with the dot method and ran a AIDA64 stress test for 20 minutes and maxed at 41c. I ran the same test prior to applying the TM30 past and maxed at 52c. So yes it made a big difference. My TV system will get a cleanup to. This is my system temps at idle.
