Replacing AMD A10-7860K CPU or adding dedicated Graphics Card question

    Hello

This is a bit convoluted to me but may be bread and butter stuff for someone with more knowledge than me.

My wife recently upgraded her computer and I've inherited her:
    AMD A7860K @ 3.6 GHZ CPU
    Gigabyte GA-F2A88XN-WIFI v3.0 FM2 Motherboard
    16gb RAM DDR3
    SSD Drives
    Windows 10 Home

I play around with midi - just as a hobby so I don't want to spend money without good cause.
There is only one PCI Express slot on the motherboard and that's taken up with my Firewire interface attached to a Behringer FCA1616. The Behringer is dual Firewire/USB.
Am I likely to notice an improvement if I use USB on the audio interface and use the PCI Express slot for a graphics card?
If I knew how to I'd overclock but I've never done that and don't want to fry anything.
I've tried to find out which CPU's I could upgrade to but I'm a bit confused with so many options available when I google.
I recently upgraded the RAM to 16gb from 8.

Any suggestions as to how to improve speed a bit will be gratefully received.

I'm afraid that your PC is well and truly obsolete with all parts out of production, upgrading wouldn't be economically worthwhile.
According to GA-F2A88XN-WIFI (rev. 3.0) Support | Motherboard - GIGABYTE Global only 2 CPUs available (most probably only second hand) A10-7870K 3900MHz and A10-7890K 4100MHz that would be just marginally better. Your music software is CPU bound so stronger graphics wouldn't help any unless for gaming.
As for data interface, Firewire and USB1.1(legacy) are same speed. Can't find which USB type is used by that Behringer FCA1616 but is most probably just that or eventually USB2 so in case you want a dedicated GPU you can free up PCIe slot by using USB instead. In any case it's not a bottleneck in any way.
BTW, Those CPUs don't OC worth a šeet and would need to upgrade your cooling, so no big loss if you don't OC anyway.

Thanks both. Sort of what I expected. I'll look at part builder again.
    Appreciated.

    dear Dave,
    I have a :
    Windows 10 Pro 64-bit (10.0, Build 19042) (19041.vb_release.191206-1406)
    Language: English (Regional Setting: English)
System Manufacturer: Micro-Star International Co., Ltd.
    System Model: MS-7C83
    BIOS: 1.40 (type: UEFI)
    Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-10400 CPU @ 2.90GHz (12 CPUs), ~2.9GHz
    Memory: 16384MB RAM
    Available OS Memory: 16250MB RAM
Card name: Intel(R) UHD Graphics 630

    256 ssd and a 2tb hdd

I play call of duty 1 and 2 aka ''FINEST HOUR'', AND ''United Offensive'' it was a 2 disk set back in 2006, also known as Call of duty Expansion pack, I also fly MSFT fsx with no problems on this new machine and integrated graphics...

I cannot get my Return to Castle Wolfenstein from 2001 to run, or Call of duty 4 Modern warfare 2007 version...

I can buy those last two on steam or wherever, or try to patch them to work, however that's not my question.

What I'd like to know what graphics card, I'm looking in the $300 range at gtx 970 or the gtx 1600 series, or equivalent amd gpu will run new games, Call of Duty remastered, or MSFT flight sim 2020 + ANY other newer game and not have a problem with my legacy games, namely COD 1 and 2.

When I read the specs for some of these games the minimum requirements are high end cards, that may cause problems for older games...

    thoughts?

    forgive my grammar

I'm not Dave but will offer my opinion: a number of old programs do appear not usable on new hardware, simply a matter of the new computers are "too good" for those games and other software. Part of the impetus for newer, faster, greater computers is driven by gamers, particularly those classified as hard-core in their circles.

Your problem is integrated graphics, specially with Intel processors. For games you do need dedicated GPU which games can recognize. All of those games play fine with more than 100 FPS even with lower grade GPU like my Rx 570, 4GB made by AMD.
Problem now is that graphic cards prices are gone crazy, absolutely crazy, even second hand ones !!!!

The easiest way to get older games like that, to run on Windows 10 and newer hardware is to use DOSBox, or get patches for the game for newer OSes and hardware.

In my case I was trying to get Doom to run on my newer system, and had to use... two 3rd party programs called: ZDL and Zdoom.

Another option is just get those older games from GoodOldGames. They come already fixed to run on newer systems and OSes.

For example: Return to Castle Wolfenstein on GOG.com

    ty Ghot,
seems the only thing to do is find the right combo of fixes...

i installed their version, after uninstalling mine, same problem...

    dear GOG,
    Return to Castle Wolfenstein
the game immediately crashes after green splash screen displays... i tried run as administrator,
I tried creating new variable solution, I tried to go to (Installing the unofficial patch by Knightmare from here should help), it was blocked as malicious website as many of your other links are malicious as well...

    ty,
