Win 10 Pro install on NVME PCIE drive: My nightmare

    My respects masters,

I would need your support to exit from an installation nightmare. The original idea is quite simple, install win 10 Pro on a fresh SFF build with only 1 NVME PCIE Drive in it.

Mobo: Asus Rog Strix Z-490-I with latest BIOS version installed
Drive: Samsung 980 Pro NVME PCIE installed in M.2_2 slot
USB Win10 bootable flash drive created with Microsoft tool

My issue: Windows installer is NEVER able to see the NVME drive to create the necessary partitions. I can see my flash drive but it disappears after a refresh.

The drive is always seen as a storage device in the bios.
As a NVME drive if I disable SATA controller or if if enable it and set it to ACHI
As a RAID unit if I enable SATA controller and set it to Intel RST

The drive is seen in the boot menu only if I disable CSM.
if the USB Win 10 flash drive is plugger it appears also in the boot as both UEFI and normal drive

    Any suggestion is welcome,

    Many thanks in advance,

    Pierre

    Hi,
Seems the flash drive was not formatted properly for uefi only boot
    I'd try rufus

    Thanks Sir,

Do you mean that the fact that my usb flash drive appears both in UEFI and normal in my boot section is an issue ? (priority is given to UEFI)

I am recommending Rufus too. It is much better than Microsoft's tool.

Enable the SATA controller and put it to Ahci mode
This should not matter for the NVMe drive as it doesn't use SATA, however you would create very different configurations with them.

The raid mode should only be used if you are setting up a raid configuration (multiple hard disks working together) or using Intel Optane, which this ssd won't support so that's a no.

Leaving it in RAID mode Will cause problems for you as you won't be able to install proper storage controller drivers or nvme driver

Many thanks guys. I will try to create a new USB drive with rufus tool selecting UEFI only.

Can you give me your recommendation in terms of bios settings:

    [Advanced Menu]
    PCH Storage Configuration>SATA Controller(s) Disabled/Enable ?

PCH Storage Configuration>SATA Mode Selection AHCI
    [Boot]
    CSM>Launch CSM: Disabled/Enable ?
Secure Boot>Secure Boot state: Setup (cannot change, it is gray)
    Secure Boot>OS Type: Other OS
Secure Boot>Key Management: Install Default SBK (they have been cleared)

    Cheers

    Hi,
    Sort of
m.2 you have to be in uefi only boot to install on one
Thing is secure boot needs to be disable, on an asus board you can do this with uefi only boot enabled not many that I know of this config is possible.

The only time I ever used Rufus was when I just happened to have the ISO.

The MediaCreationTool is by far the easiest way to make a Windows 10 install on a USB flash drive. Just a few click and then wait for it to finish. I have never had a problem doing it this way.

Rufus is trouble, try https://universalusbinstaller.com Windows 10 Installer (format USB as NTFS)
