RAM Upgrade help, ASUS TUF GAMING FX505DT

Please help, im new to everything about RAM and i want to upgrade my ASUS TUF FX505DT to 8GB or even 12 GB
currently i have a single channel ram 4GB, is it okay to buy a single 8GB RAM and install it alongside the 4GB RAM? making up a total of 12GB? or it is mandatory that it has to be the same size? like 4x4 8x8 16x16? also is brand an issue?, please help. Sorry for my english as it is not my first language. Thank you!

Please help , i'm new to buying ram , I just checked my CPU-Z and my current RAM , the one that came with the laptop when i first bought it was only 4GB and the speed was at 1600 MHz , can i still buy and upgrade 2 x 2666 MHz RAM? specifically 2 x 8GB DDR4 PC4-21300 • CL=19 • Single Ranked • x8 based • Unbuffered • NON-ECC • DDR4-2666 • 1.2V • 512Meg x 64 ?

I could not find a recommended memory list for your Asus model at the Asus website.

Here is what the manual says about your RAM as supplied from the factory:

DDR4 2400MHz SDRAM, 2 x SO-DIMM socket for expansion, total up to 32 GB SDRAM, Dual-channel

I assume that means you can use up to 32 gb of memory, which would be 2 sticks of 16 gb each.

If you have a 4 GB stick now, and add an 8 gb stick, that would give you a total of 12, but I think they would run in single channel mode. Performance would suffer slightly.

Or you could discard the current 4 gb stick and buy a new matched pair with 4 gb in each stick, giving you 8 gb total and dual channel.

Or you could buy a matched pair with 8 gb in each stick, giving you a total of 16 gb, dual channel.

The ram that came with the laptop was only at 1600 MHz, can i still use RAM sticks that are 2600 MHz?
