Old / dry thermal paste on mobo

    Hi,

I hope general support is correct.

I was cleaning the old thermal paste on a laptop and a little bit got stuck to the board. I swear I really tried to remove it. I tried using the lint free cloth applying a little pressure with a screwdriver, then a q-tip, and nothing. Always with rubbing alcohol.

It's really small but it's stuck there.
    It's the white thing.

Do you think I ruined it?

Probably won't hurt, but Arctic Silver (thermal paste) sells a cleaning kit to safely remove old thermal paste, if you want to go that far.

To me, that doesn't look like what I'd call thermal paste. Looks more like a fragment of a thermal pad. (That's another form of thermal transfer material.)

It would only be a problem if it contained electrically conductive material. It almost certainly does not.

If you are compulsive enough to want to remove it anyway, be very careful. Use no steel tools. Cutting a trace on the motherboard could be bad.

Speaking of Arctic Silve, I suggest not using that as a replacement paste. It is supposed to be electrically nonconductive (even though it contains silver metal), but getting it on the board is not recommended. There are dielectric (nonconductive) pastes available that have better performance, are easier to use, and no more expensive. Noctua NT-H1 is one. (In the US, avauilable from Amazon.)

    Thank you both! :)

I tried and reaaaally tried and and couldn't remove it.
It's been used for about 100 hours since it happened and everything's ok.

Just in case I ordered the remover tool and will replace the paste with another one.

    Thanks again for everything
