Concerned over the temperature of the processor

I have this refurbished laptop I bought for my grandson and during downloading and installing a few updates that the exhaust air is very hot almost too hot to hold your fingers in the airstream. The machine is a Dell E6450 Latitude with an i7 4810MQ processor that HW Info is telling me that the four cores are running at an average of 44C degrees at idle.

Is this normal and is there some way using software of checking out the running temperatures - other wise the machine is running really very fast and good.

Based on my experience with laptops, that's not an unusual temp--especially for an i7. You could experiment with the Windows Power Options to see if there's a plan that would result in a lower temp.

That's a pretty fast cpu with a maximum die junction temperature of 100C. I wouldn't be worried about 44C. Dell was clueless about fan control and temperature management, I don't think that's changed much.

I'm running two HP notebooks with i7 4810 and they run hot depending upon the load.
    Currently they display 94 and 82 C.
The first one while under warranty had its heat sink and fan replaced.
There were no hardware problems found with diagnostic testing.
The CPU had thermal paste reapplied.
    Temperatures didn't improve.
Had the warranty continued they said they would have replaced the MB.

HD Sentinel measures the highest drive temperatures which I'd used as a method to monitor lifetime cooling problems.
Run HD Sentinel: (free or trial edition)
Hard Disk Sentinel - HDD health and temperature monitoring
Hard Disk Sentinel - HDD health and temperature monitoring

So run the Dell diagnostics custom tests overnight (including stress tests):
    https://www.dell.com/support/home/en...aptop/diagnose

    Code:
    Performance
    Bluescreen analyzer
    Hard drive
    Hard drive stress
    Memory
    Memory stress
    Motherboard
    Processor
    Processor stress
    System stress
    Code:
    Video capture
    Video card
    Video card stress

The next day test components as necessary (many are interactive).

Core Temp is a light weight app that can sit in the taskbar's notification area and show you the temps of each core.

It can also show you the maximum that had been reached while it was running. 'Normal' would be anything up to 20°C below the Tj Max of your CPU. My Dell Latitudes regularly hit that when they're working hard. If it gets within 10°C of Tj Max you probably need to clean the fluff out of the fans

Thanks for all the replies and it looks like that I don't have much to worry about then because my grandson will only be using simple gaming apps on the thing so I guess that average core temps are not that bad.

There was no dust in the fan or the machine when I had the back off so dust is not an issue plus I didn't know that i7's could run that hot and I noticed that the cooling system is pretty basic for a laptop with just a grill over the CPU and GPU heatsinks and sucked out through a quite small outlet vent.

Thanks again for all of your help to everyone.
