I'm wanting to upgrade my power supply but...

Instead of a 20 or 24 pin plug on my motherboard I have an 8 pin.

I stumbled upon a video that shows a 24 pin to 8 pin connector cable (I believe is the right terminology) and I'm hesitant about buying one.

what's your opinion of the 24 pin to 8 pin connector should I buy it or is there a better alternative besides buying a new computer?

That is a new-to-me layout of the motherboard and I'd go with a replacement of the power supply instead of an adapter. But whether Dell has one with greater capacity might be an issue.

I should also have mentioned there may not be sufficient room in the case for a larger power supply and any adapters used may also be a space issue. Cooling can also be a problem. That's just a factor with the SFF and UltraSFF cases, smaller is not always better.

I am confused about your computer based on your "My Computer" (which says it is a laptop?). All current desktop motherboards, as far as I know, require a 20/24 pin power connector and usually require an additional 4, 6 or 8 pin power connector to supply CPU voltage.

If your motherboard requires an additional 8-pin EPS 8-pin connector for CPU voltage, then you will need a newer power supply that has such a connector

His 2nd PC specs list a Dell Optiplex 7020, there is no need to upgrade the PSU. If you want to learn more contact Dell directly. https://www.dell.com/support/inciden...?ref=contactus

Dells use their own proprietary connections, you just can`t slap a aftermarket PSU in their.

Scroll down to the power connections, it says Mid and Small form factors use 8, 6 and 4 pin connectors.

Thought DELL was done with that some time ago. That was a major factor that got me building my own rigs some time ago. Guess some things never change.

Well I upgraded the power supply on Dell Optiplex 7020 Mini Tower. And like addram stated it's not worth upgrading the power supply but my needs and money was 2 different things. So I did what I felt I had to do.

I got a thermaltake 500watt power supply and my computer seems to be running better than before. All though I ran into some obstacles like figuring out what pin I needed to plug into the 4 pin motherboard connector because the power supply only has a 6 pin. I just hope it's correctly plugged in and judging by it powering on without issues and all my hardware seems to works great.

Thank you everyone for your help :)I'm wanting to upgrade my power supply but...-screenshot_20201006-201853.jpg

On some I've worked on I noted the 6-pin plug was usable on 4-pin 'socket' because of its indexing, only fits one way as needed. Power supplies are pretty much universal, usable in different scenarios. Some have 24-pin main plugs but a 4-pin section can be 'unhooked' for use in 20-pin sockets.
