16gb ram vs 32gb ram Upgrade

I have 8gb and will be upgrading to 16gb ram. But then i saw how there is 32gb ram ... price is double that of 16gb ram.

Now is there any point of upgrading a laptop to 32gb ram? Or its a complete waste? I mean i know i could always upgrade to 32gb ram in the future but if i do that, i could always get something for my 16gb ram selling it on ebay right?

Someone mentioned since i have an old machine dell xps 15 9550 and 8gb ram... 16gb should be fine.

Yes, the XPS 15 can take up to 32GB [crucial.com] but I've found 8GB works just fine as would 16GB [I have an XPS 17", rehabbed but only 1 small problem]. As for price, generally the double the capacity the double the price so no real break getting more if not needed.

Check Task Manager > Performance > Memory...
That will pretty much tell you if you need more RAM.

This is mine, at best I will use maybe 26-28%. So I don't need more RAM.

Hi. Laptop when not using any programs at all.. still uses about 3gb/7.9 so around 35% ram when not doing anything. When i play poker and use those programs, it's using at least 6gb/8gb ram or 75% minimum... its more like 80-90% ram on AVERAGE when playing.

So 16gb would be more than good enough?

At this moment I'm using 32 GB with memory 77%.
This is the maximum RAM for the computer.
If there were DIMM allowing 128 GB how can you gauge optimal RAM?

    Yep.
Things like 4 Chrome windows with 10 tabs open in each, or heavy Photoshop use, heavy multitasking, running 4 AAA video games at the same time, etc... use more RAM.

Right now, I have only 7 chrome tabs opened and nothing else.

    It's using 4.8gb/7.9gb ram or 59%.

When i play and do my main thing it uses at least 6.2gb minimum or at least 80% ram it seems.

I normally have a ton of chrome tabs opened. On average, i have about 5 chrome windows open... say they are 5 tabs on each one so 25 total. One of them i play youtube music... all this while running poker programs and lot of tables. so thats why i always use so much ram... at least 80% minimum when im doing my regular thing. So is 16gb enough?

Also, why does it use 35% ram, when i have absolutely nothing opened? I assume its my background processes? Again, i don't use them but i don't know which ones to turn off etc.

If I was ever using 80%, I would probably get more RAM.
The only thing I can do that would get me NEAR 16GB is something like running a memory stress test. And that's not something I do on a daily basis.

Just running Windows 10, doing nothing, uses about 3GB -4GB of RAM. You might be able to trim that down to something like 2.8 - 3.1GB, but you won't get much lower than that.

It pretty much comes down to your needs and your budget. Like I said above... if all you do all day is edit video, run Photoshop, etc., get 32GB. But for what you describe...16GB should be the most you would ever use.

Keep in mind, that when RAM fills up, Windows starts using the "page file" as "extra RAM". On a hard drive, this would seriously slow things down. But these days, with the lightning fast SSDs, it's not that much of a hardship.

Hey. I had no idea that even if you use windows ten with no problems on... it still uses 2.8 - 3.1GB memory. I thought it would have used even less than that like a gb only when doing aboslutely nothing? So that means what i have... is normal then when not using any programs and just leaving it like that? Im shocked by that.

Okay but if i ever want to upgrade to
32GB ram, i could always sell the 16GB for a decent amount? Example it cost around 65 dollars for the 16GB ram. And a bit less than double for the 32GB. I probably could get half the amount for the 16GB ram that i sell later on? But then it probably be worth less since more machines has 16GB as the standard right?

If you wanna see the least "just Windows" uses... reboot the computer, then look at Task Manager.
Wait for about 5 mins, for all the delayed start Services to get finished.

16GB should be more than enough, but if you're seriously contemplating 32GB, then just get it now.

Selling used computer parts is done all the time. But for low price items, there's not much point.
Unless you have a lot of them.

Let's say you pay $65 for the 16GB of RAM. Then in a year or two decide to sell it. You'll probably only get about $25 for it, then you might have to ship it somewhere.. etc.

IF you get 16GB now, and later on decide you want 32GB... just put the 16GB in a drawer somewhere for spares.

Now if you buy a $500 vid card and decide you want a more powerful one later on...THAT would be worth selling.

    /edit

After a reboot, and on a pretty stripped down Windows 10 Home, I can get down to 2.1GB RAM used.
As soon as I open my browser (FF), to the normal 3 tabs I have open, it's back to... 2.5GB.
If I do a couple searches for things, maybe another two tabs open... I'm right back to about 3GB.

Like I said, I pretty much stripped Win 10 Home down to the bare bones. No apps, one browser, one browser window, running no other programs.
