Can the CPU be upgraded? Is it worth doing so?
I've never done this before which is why I'm asking here.
You could upgrade to a K processor if the BIOS will allow it but that would be a small gain. I would look to getting more modern hardware if you want more performance
I'd agree with Dude. That CPU was near the top of the food chain in its day. The 4790 would be a step up, but a small step.
Sort of what I figured but was hoping. It's been a really good system though it's been acting weird the last few weeks, plus I lost the Realtek WiFi two weeks ago. It doesn't show anywhere in Windows 10. I just did a Clean Install and it still doesn't show so I'm pretty sure it's a hardware failure. There is no way to disable the WiFI in BIOS/UEFI settings.
I just ordered a Bluetooth/WiFi USB dongle to give me WiFi and also replace another USB Bluetooth dongle I've been using. At don't have any more free ports (2.0 or 3.0) so I also bought a powered 4 port USB 3.1 hub.
I've seen refurbed motherboards for $70 or $80 but I'm not real keen on buying a refurbed board, even with a 60 day warranty.
I think that generation used DDR 3 RAM, so you'd have to upgrade RAM, CPU, and motherboard to get a good upgrade beyond a 4770. That would probably cost $350 on up.
Something like 120 for an H series board; 180 for an i5-10400, and the rest for RAM.
Here ya go. I switched you to an ATX case as well. You can reuse your drives and vid card, or I can add those to build.

The Intel 10600K is better in gaming, the AMD 3700X is better in everything else.

You wouldn't really gain anything to upgrading to the K variant, it's just the overclockable version.
You can always go for a used B85 or H87 motherboard if you want to keep your system.
I decided to stay with what I have, replace the dead Realtek Wireless with a Realtek acn WiFi/Bluetooth and replace the somewhat flaky Nvidia GTX 750 with a 850M (750 chipset, 4GB memory, DVI, HDMI, VGA) still 6 year old tech, and add 4 powered USB 3.1 ports.
I'll build a new rig in a year or two (my first believe it or not so looking forward to it) but with a new WiFi and GPU I think the old girl will carry me on for a bit yet.
