Upgrading Desktop PC to Gaming PC

I am in the process of checking out what it would take to upgrade my husbands PC so it can run the Trainz Simulator without being jerky at all (or at least will minimise the jerkiness).

At present he has a PC with the following items:
CPU: Intel i5-7600 (LGA 1151) (I believe this is a 7th Gen CPU)
    Motherboard: Gigabyte Z270-HD3 LGA1151 DDR4 ATX
    Memory: Corsair Vengeance LPX 8GB DDR4 2400MHz (x2); Corsair Vengeance LPX 16GB DDR4 2400MHz (x2)
Graphics Card: Zotac Geforce GTX1050Ti Mini 4GB
He runs Trainz from a Crucial 500GB SSD

I know that to run anything of 8th Gen or above you need to have items of above a certain spec. Obviously an 8th Gen or better CPU - but I also believe you need a Mobo with a 310 or better chipset and memory better than he has at present (I think it needs to be 2666Mhz or better). Whilst talking about memory I do wonder whether it would be worth having a mobo that can take at least one, maybe two M2 modules. He'll also need a better Graphics Card although we're not in a position to get one of the latest cards.

Armed with the info above re what he currently has, I've been looking on the eBuyer site for bits and have come up with the following in the hope of upgrading to a 9th Gen pc:
    CPU: i7 9700K
    Mobo: Gigabyte Z390 UD
    Memory: Corsair Vengeance LPX 32GB
Graphic Card: ZOTAC Geforce GTX1660 SUPER

I would appreciate it if folk could comment on my thoughts above and any advice re improvements would be very welcome. Any help would be most appreciated. Thanks.

Which version of the program does he have? New versions tend to require a better computer.

Have you tried running game from a clean boot?

It seems to me your current machine already meets or exceeds game requirements.

Perform a Clean Boot in Windows 10 to Troubleshoot Software Conflicts

Does this game have an online component and if so how is device connected to router and is your ISP supplying the bandwidth you are contracted to receive? If connected wirelessly try wired.

When game is running is anything in the task manager being taxed? (Memory, disk, etc)

How much free space is on SSD?

As memory is not matched I might pull the 8GB assuming the 16GB sticks are a matched set.

Thanks for your comments. Thanks particularly to MisterEd for the System Requirements page for Trainz. As far as I am aware he is on the very latest version and checking that page it would seem his PC doesn't meet the recommended spec. In fact I'm not absolutely sure it meets the minimum spec!

Thanks also to ThrashZone for his comment on the memory which confirms info found on the PC Gamer site re hardware. In fact since posting my query, I've effectively sorted out a PC I would like to build for him. This would be pretty much as listed above except for the memory which would be that recommended by ThrashZone and the PC Gamer site. The PC would therefore consist of the following major items:

    CPU: i7 9700K
    Mobo: Gigabyte Z390 Aorus Ultra
    Memory: G. Skill TridentZ 32GB DDR4-3200
Graphic Card: ZOTAC Geforce GTX1660 SUPER

As far as I am aware this would be a better than half decent 9th Gen system.

Caledon Ken - I haven't so far had a chance try your recommendations as its a case of getting access to my husbands PC but when I can get to it I'll have a try and see what happens. Suffice it to say that I'm not so sure it does meet the minimum requirements - yet!

Its really just a case now of getting the money together and convincing my husband that he needs an updated PC.
