Why would you buy a 8-core cpu over a 12-core is beyond me at the price point even though the IPC is better i would still get the 3900x
Only thing that the 5000 series can boast but realistically gaming wise you need 60fps pretty much to be fine anymore than that is just brownie points.

It entirety depends on your main use case. For gaming I would definitely go for the newer CPU. The difference is huge. For other workloads the 12-core may benefit a little bit, but the overall performance difference is minimal.

    More cores isn't always better.

Price point is what i am talking about and seriously after so many frames you can't even tell anymore as long there is no stuttering going on or lag.

Just because it has a better IPC and it is new and shinny doesn't make it better in the long run 12 cores will do the job and last a bit longer for these same scenarios.

The average user just doesn't play games anymore if that was just the case then yes i can see it but the price is still a turn off even a person with no Computer IQ would see 12 is better than 8 and would be inclined to ask why they're similar in pricing this is just my take

My IPC is not far behind which is why there is no point in upgrading for a marginal 10-15+ frames i won't notice

Welcome to the AMD family. Been happy with mine. I go back and forth between Intel and AMD, but built 3 AMD systems in past 15 months for son, wife and myself.

There is so much more into CPU computing than just cores and IPC. The 12- and 8-core CPUs are similarily priced because they are similar in performance.

I agree that more cores might last longer in the future, but we are not even close to that yet. If you run a ton of services and apps at the same time, sure more cores will perform a bit better, but if you run just a few apps at the same time, you won't notice any difference.

By only taking a look at all the Ryzen CPU generations AMD has released, you can see that there is a huge leap in performance for each generation in pretty much all workloads. And I'm not talking about benchmarking apps but real world performance numbers.

Upgrading is one thing, but if you buy new, pick the latest if they are same price compared to older generations. If I could afford a new PC today, I would not hesitate even once and would go for a Ryzen 5000-series build any time. They're really impressive.

Same goes for my laptop. A few Ryzen generations up and it would be 4x faster and use half the energy with same double the amount of cores as I currently have. I'm actually kinda pissed that I can't afford an upgrade.

Update: Fixed wrong claims about CPU cores vs performance for laptop product.

I you look at any 1st or 2nd PC spec it says "Hard Drives:" & that comes from the forum programmer "!
So I am not the only one who states these facts, lol.
The Cambridge Dictionary quotes the following:
A part of a computer that reads information on a hard disk, or a separate device that can be connected to a computer in order to do this
    or/&
A disk on which a large amount of information can be stored and used by a computer or other piece of electronic equipment:
So it does not specifically say it has to be a "spinning disk" to store data on but we all know what it means when somebody says "What hard drive do you have ?"

The best one of those is the 2TB & 4TB just look at it's Read/Write differences but they only problem is well you know what !

Thanks for the laugh hard to say which part was funniest

Honestly speaking the prices wouldn't even be close if we weren't in a Pandemic and Price gouging tactics on everything you want to use .

I'm sure this argument wouldn't be so critical if the last GEN was almost a $100+ cheaper know what i mean ?

Basically sticking to Ryzen 3 prices on 5000 Series and drop 3000 series prices by $100 or more just to move them
