ASUS Maximus VIII GENE Motherboard, Core i5 CPU Lights up, No Power Up

    ASUS Maximus VIII GENE Motherboard, Core i5 CPU Lights up, No Power Up


    A friend of mine asked me to install Win10 on his son's computer..

    It was a new MB that he had just installed into a new gamer case...

    Motherboard won't boot up.. The board LEDs and buttons light up, but there is no power up. Fans don't come on... Nothing..

    I suspect one of two things..

    A non compatible CPU or a short when the son put a mounting stud where there was no hole in the MB...

    Pictures of the MB, the CPU and where the board may have been shorted...

    I have tried resetting the CMOS, total power shutdown (pull the CMOS Battery, etc etc..) with no luck...

    Am I looking at a toasted MB???

    Thanx for any assistance...

    Make sure the 8-pin CPU power connector from the power supply is plugged into the motherboard - upper near left corner.

    Sounds like a standoff in the wrong place shorted the motherboard!

    The best thing to do, is to power up the system on a wooden table with the RAM and video card to see if it boots...

    Yep, tried that as well.. Nothing but the motherboard and the PSU on a bare wooden table.. Tried with or without RAM, with or without CPU... Fans don't budge either the CPU fan, the Chassis fan nor the PSU fan..

    While searching around the net for clues, I came across this little diddy...

    Your motherboard and cpu are not compatible-the maximus viii Gene has a z170 chipset which makes it compatible with 6th and 7th gen cpus (after a bios update). For an 8th gen cpu you will need a mobo with a 300 chipset such as z370, b360, h370 etc.

    As I mentioned, I wasn't the one who installed the CPU in the MB and the MB in the case, I am not sure the compatibility issue is copacetic...

    If you had gone straight to Asus web page for this motherboard it does not list the i5 9400F at all:

    MAXIMUS VIII GENE CPU Support | Motherboards | ASUS Global

    I know from building a PC for a friend who used the 9400F & only certain motherboards support it from 1st Bios without Bios update.

    There is also a chance that the standoff was sat underneath pcb & was insulated by the ink/paint they use to cover the board as can not see any copper bleed through from your photo.
