Any PSU Recommendations? (Dell Computers)

Not much I can upgrade with a dell xps 8700 or 8500 except the graphics card, ram, and of course the storage, but maybe i can get a better psu than the crappy stock one it comes with

The PSU my computer (Dell XPS 8700) and my father's computer (Dell XPS 8500) both have a max rating of 450W, and until we end up deciding to upgrade to newer computers, I would greatly appreciate if I could get a good recommendation for any PSU that would work with our computers in the 500W+ range (min) or the 700W range (max). I believe our computer cases are ATX, and despite somewhat differing components, the cable setup (blue sata cables dont count, those are new) looks to be the same last time I check his computer

any psu recommendations for our computers would be greatly appreciated; yes we will upgrade to vastly superior (better than our current ones at least) computers in the future, but until then, its upgrading our stuff piece by piece

You need to confirm whether or not your current PSU and motherboard use industry-standard connectors.

At one time, some Dell PCs did not. They used proprietary connectors found only on Dells.

I have no idea if that is still true.

Dell uses standard power supply connectors on these newer models, so any standard power supply unit will plug into the dell mobo.

However, do you have a component that is requiring more power than this PSU can supply? Simply upgrading a power supply for the sake of upgrading the power supply doesn't really get you a noticeable improvement.

They are standard ATX style. I would get "fully modular" type power supply to avoid having to stuff unused power leads in the case. The only issue is some metal will probably need to be cut out as Dell does not use a power on/off switch on their power supplies so you will have to cut out to accommodate the power switch on ATX power supplies.

One comment on most Dell power supplies; they tend to under rate them and a 500 watt may be more a 550 or 600 watt capable power supply. I work the Dell forums and this has been the case with many models.

There is no need to change the PSU unless it has a problem. My advice is to avoid XFX PSUs since I had two fail under warranty and consider EVGA PSUs who offer a 10 year warranty for their better PSUs.

I'm with the others that say save your money, the stock PSU is just fine until you want to run dual video cards.
