I don't forsee the "demise" of Intel in any way, shape or form. However, for the past few years, all of my builds would have been Intel without thinking twice. However, now with the new Ryzen 3x series, I now would encourage absolutely everyone to look at their options.

For my son's newest build, we looked at the Core i7-9700, the Core i9-9900, the Ryzen 7 3700x/3800x and Ryzen 9 3900. I picked up the Ryzen 7 3800X, for $329 which included the CPU cooler, and a copy of Borderlands 3. It's quite close (within 5%) on most benchmarks to the i9-9900k,which would have been about $575 after getting a middle of the road $50 cooler.

Saving nearly $250 on the CPU, put money into other areas on the computer. So, while the term "budget chip" doesn't necessarily apply to AMD in terms of performance, it's still somewhat relevant when comparing the actual price.

Way back in the day, i was all Intel. But the Pentium 4 was crap, while the AMD Athlon 64 X2 was banging. Then, once the Core i3/i5/i7 line came out, it was back to Intel for me again without question. Today, I can do either Intel or AMD and be 100% satisfied with my choice.

    As a side note...

Be reminded "enthusiast" and "thrifty" don't always mesh. When I decided to build my i9-9900K system thrifty wasn't in the mix. I simply wanted what I wanted and didn't concern myself with cost. Nothing wrong with saving money (I'm always looking for a deal) but sometimes that thing you really want costs

And being this IS an enthusiast forum be reminded some will gladly pay a premium for that "5%" difference. Look at some of the benchmarks here and note the systems

At the end of the day I'm quite sure you're as happy with your system as I am of mine.

Yeah, but sometimes you have to stay on a budget. We just purchased a new home in 2019 and put a lot of money down. And this was a Christmas gift for my son, so I had to spend an equivalent amount on my daughter too.

I'm never one to buy the absolute top of the line. I'd much rather buy something now, and something again in 3 years. I usually only run a benchmark or two to ensure that something isn't way off on my box. As long as his games are playing right, and the box is stable, that's what matters to me.

You are absolutely right, totally happy with his system. Heck, I took his old system and am delighted. Now I have a Core i5-6500, 16GB of RAM, 2 x 512GB NVMe, and a 6GB EVGA 1060FTW. Makes me a nice little lab machine to run some VM's on at home.

To be clear I'm not asking anyone to justify their budget cause I'm certainly not justifying mine

Anyway, my budget was what I needed to build what I wanted - Point being I knew what I wanted going in. Just as you did. And like you I have bills and obligations too. I'm also constantly upgrading my PC as well.

And for the record, I wouldn't spend $10 dollars on golfing, but know friends who have $500 dollar clubs. We spend on the things we enjoy the most. For me it's PC building and photography

Yeah, I used to upgrade a lot more, but as I have gotten older, I do a lot less with the computer at home. I work at a computer all day at work and have since 1997...so, when I come home anymore I rarely use my computer.

My desktop was a 2009 build until we upgraded my son. My everyday machine is a 2014 Macbook pro. And my phone is a 2.5 year old Samsung Galaxy Note 8.
