I had to take the same test Cliff, as mine is custom build, did it myself. Your GPU card is much better than mine, as I did not buy a 1080, because of the price. But I didn't do that bad, kinda surprised me.

Are you suppose to do a reboot before hand to kill any running stuff, or does it make a difference.
some one should make some tutorials on benchmarking and over clocking.

Searching the forums for it in the different threads just brings up a lot of stuff for specific questions, but no real tutorial, like in the proper preparation for a benchmark, how to make adjustments to CPU, memory, and Graphics.

Doing it wrong, I know, could fry something, and I had to save up for a few years to buy this baby, so I'm not tweakin' a darn thing until I know what it's about.

I get the feeling it's like calibrating a HDTV or a monitor:
where the slightest change in contrast, you need to then check how it effected brightness, then adjust that, and go back to contrast, then check sharpness and gamma, make adjustments, then check contrast again... and so on, until you get as good as a compromise as you can accept. And this is how I picture Over Clocking.

Edit. @Cliff S is it possible that your M.2 SSD isn't sitting on Gen 4 x4 slot? Anything less than x4 will not give you the maximum M.2 SSD performance. Check also the bandwidth tradeoffs between SATA, M.2 and PCIe slots. If you have 2 slots sharing a bandwidth, one of them either gets slowed down or disabled. Check the mobo manual.

This is how I have it set up:
1) M.2 PCIe has my PM951 SSD
2)Choice here as it has SATA1 & SATA2, or together SATAe ports, I have only 1 SSD in the SATA1 port here.
3) SATA3 & SATA4(are unavailable when using M.2 PCIe interface module in M.2 slot, so are empty)
4) SATA5 & SATA6 have 1 SSD & 1 HDD @7200rpm

A few screenshots from my BIOs also, as you said to look if my M.2 PCIe is sharing it's connection, answer: Nope, but I wouldn't have looked, or even thought of it, had you not asked

Cliff you could free up your Sata 3/4 ports if you used a Lycom DT-120 M.2 PCIe to PCIe 3.0 x4 Adapter, which uses a empty PCIe x4, x8, or x16 slot on your MB. You would get same speeds. When and if I get a Samsung M2 card, I am going to use the adapter myself. So I don't lose any Ports.

I just did a disk performance test the old fashioned geeky way
Using: winsat disk -n disknumber

Top is the Samsung M.2: winsat disk -n 3
Bottom is Samsung 850 Pro: winsat -n 0

You know what, I always thought you have the Samsung 950 Pro. In that case, your diskmark score should be ok. I am so sorry to confuse you.
