    Yes, but "was" it plugged into a power source?

    I had an old Belkin USB 2.0 hub that didn't necessarily need to be plugged in to work depending on the device connected. Keyboards and mice no issue, printers - issue if not plugged in.

    Oh. I see. No it was definitely plugged in to AC power at the time.

    Yep, power consumption and current draw on USB stuff varies a lot.
    USB 2.0 i think maxed out at 500mah (0.5amp), whereas USB 3.0 is almost double the output at 900mah! Does anybody know if USB 3.1 improves again on the current it can handle? I always seem to lag behind in the USB world.
    One thing to remember is Windows 10 at some point, removed the old style USB to Serial support for older devices. Look for prolific RS232 support. Im pretty sure these old drivers would work if you forced them onto Windows 10.
