Best to have molex (or with an adapter) and old style flat plug in leads. Testing a couple of IBM XT HDD's.
Or can I simply use an existing modern PSU and graft on the leads? Quick, cheap and dirty to test spin-up.

How are you going to test HDD without connecting it to a computer ?. As long as I remember desktop drives they used Molex connector for power, even old ones with MFM and BFI data cables (before IDE). As that HDD is most probably an IDE PATA drive you need that old, wide data cable and same type of connections on the MB.
Most PSUs if not all still have molex connectors, if all that's being done is testing if it spins up then that will do.
Anything further then make and Model number of the drive would help! My XT had a 20MB Seagate MFM in it, normally they came with a 10mb one if I remember correctly although pretty sure an XT could have an RLL. IDE or SCSI drives with the appropriate ISA card.
I'm remembering back around '95 that the AT power supplies had to have something plugged in, a load on them or they would immediately burn up when connected to the AC supply [cost me one when working in a shop]. I have some adapters from the SATA power cords to the 4-pin Molex plug for using the older PATA drives and some Y-cables from the Molex leads to the SATA plug for newer drives on older computers.

My drives are from 1983-1984. Molex connectors came in later, I believe.
Take a peek at some IBM AT/XT PSU's pictures to see what I mean.
All I want to do is see if they spin-up. Need to find the flat power connectors, lol.
Otherwise, I will think out of the box, with tiny alligator clips - that's a PITA.
