If you go with a budget parts of course it'll be "less expensive". However, like Intel, AMD is no longer pushing budget over performance. And depending on CPU and motherboard, "AMD" could actually be "more" expensive than a comparable Intel system.
Yeah, my son has the nicest computer in the house. Am looking at upgrading him to an I9 or a Ryzen 3, 32GB of RAM, a few M2 NvME drives, an EVGA 2080 Super, Seasonic fully modular power supply, and coolermaster H500M case. I plan to spend around $2k.

He currently has an I5-6500, with 16GB of RAM, 2 x 512GB NvME drives, 1 x 2TB HDD, Nvidia 1060 6GB, Seasonic fully modular power supply with antec 302 case. I will take this as my desktop when I upgrade him.

My current desktop is an Intel Q9550 quad core, with 8GB of DDR2-500RAM, with a 500GB SSD and 1TB HDD, with a Corsair modular power supply and Nvidia GTX 570.

Yes, that is what I will do. Will make it better for that occasional vm that I want to run in a home lab environment.

Well, my son has been working very hard mowing lawns, edging, and such around our new neighborhood this summer. He has earned nearly $300 in the past 2 months. And we have quite a number of people looking for help with fall cleanup, so he will have more money coming in. He will probably cover nearly 1/2 the cost.

I work in IT, and honestly spend very little time these days doing anything at home (bet I am on my laptop/desktop less than 2 hours per week on average) . And about 90% of what I do at work is all infrastructure in the cloud, so all of my iron and lab stuff runs in Amazon Web Services. This means I have very little need to have much at home anymore. Even close to decommissioning my home file server as I have nearly everything in the cloud (dropbox and OneDrive). Things that need to stay private online are encrypted, and it's synced to a few devices in the house so I don't have to back it up really anymore. Chances of me losing all of my PC's, Mac's on the same day that OneDrive/Dropbox lose everything is slim).

My son on the other hand lives on his computer. He's on a 3 monitor setup, doing 144-166Hz stuff with his existing setup. He's looking to get to 4k. In addition to gaming, he has been doing a lot of work in Adobe Photoshop, Lightroom and After Effects. He does streaming, etc.

So, I live now vicariously through my son.

There's nothing like earning your keep to get what you want. Good on your son, and you for recognizing that.

I don't do any IT work these days, but I do understand the power of cloud backup. For me I'm using Carbonite's Safe backup where it's set it and forget it. Also use OneDrive and Dropbox, as well as backups to my NAS. Like you, I'm not worry free of missing backups or losing critical data.

I'm kind of like your son in that I'm constantly on my PC be it photo editing in both LR and PS CC (subscription) or gaming. When not at home my laptop for school and other stuff. Don't run multiple monitors though.

Anyway I know your son will be happy when he gets that new machine.

    Peace
