Don't faint - I have a 10 MB HDD that I would like to get into, lol!

Hmmm, now I've dug it out I've remembered more of its history. I had upgraded it a few times, first with another (non-IBM) 386 m/board, then adding a 3.5" floppy to its existing 5.25" one, and replacing the HDD with an IDE one. Finally the m/board and hard drive were transplanted into a new case.

Inveterate hoarder that I am, I still have all the original parts stored away safely, but restoring it to original condition will take a while - something for the long winter evenings, I think. It's got to be done though, it's a classic icon of PC history.

First though, I have to work out which of my two Seagate MFM drives it had, the ST-4026 or the ST-4038. I'll have to match the date codes against that of the PC case.

    @Bree -

Let me know how it all turns out. Perhaps you could post a photo of it working.
Hope that your HDD has it's heads parked.

    Cheers!

The head-parking reminds me of my first computer, a Hewitt Rand AMD 80386/40MHz back in '92 with a 120MB HDD and 4MB RAM. Whoever assembled it and loaded the software put in a batch file that ran at shutdown to park the heads, must have been a hold-over from the MFM/RLL drives and really wasn't needed with the 'new' IDE [now called PATA] drives with their Voice Coil Relay that control the arms/heads [loss of power does the parking].

Will do, but it will be a long term project. I know that I did store all the parts, knowing where I stored them is another matter

While you wait, I had hoped to post a photo of one of my other museum pieces in action (an IBM model 5155, the last word in portable computing) but when I try to turn it on the floppy drive leds flicker briefly, then the power supply trips out with a click

    IBM model 5155 - wow.

That was one expensive beast, if I remember correctly.

This is a nice site to visit:

    Steve's Computer Collection

I think that I have small alligator clips and a power supply to spin up the IMI 5012H this weekend.

Play the YT video (in my first post) of the drive sounds. Cool, isn't it?

Your picture is like this one on Error Page | eBay
But it has the card and cables. For internal install it appears the motherboard will need an ISA card mounting socket. I never had to work with SCSI or MFM/RLL drives [fortunately], got started with late 80386 and early 80486 building.

I did an image search and used that picture, and others, since I was lazy, lol.

My drive cost me $35 from a computer club. I was always a storage geek.
    Guess I did well.

    Maybe.

Yes, but the first one, the XT with the power supply that tripped out, is more interesting to me - that's exactly the same behaviour as my 5155. As mine has an XT m/board inside I'm hoping the fix will be as simple as his was (it may even be the same capacitor that has failed)

Are you sure that it's the Capacitor?

Don't know until I get my ammeter out and start testing, but it is a likely candidate. It's (very) late here and I need my sleep. I have a busy weekend planned, so it will be a while before I get the time to strip it down and have a look.
