    3Pin Heatsink On A 4PIn Motherboard?

I've upgraded my heatsink, it has 3pins, and I went to look at ettings in the UEFI (BIOS), becuase some motherboards have the options of 3pin and 4pin.
The only option was PWM 4pin.

Will that cause any issues? I don't overclock my CPU.
It seems someone loud, or maybe that is just me.

    Hi @Kamryn

No there's no harm in placing a 3 pin connector on a 4 pin slot on the motherboard.
If you check in the UEFI, does the fan register to the bios?

Some fans can start off as loud when the computer first starts, but most fans calm down after a few seconds.
Just out of curiosity, what's your current temp ?

The CPU fan is still loud. It recognises it in the BIOS

What is the brand/model of the new cooler? Some have relatively noisy fans.
The Noctua line of CPU coolers have quiet fans.

With only 3 pins the speed control is by lowering the Fan Voltage, say from 12v > 9v.

You can buy fixed Fan leads with a Resistor built in which reduces the Fan voltage and hence the rpm and noise.

Or you can buy a fan controller to do that same job.

My PC case actually came with a 3 channel 3 pin Fan speed controller. Nominally for the case Fans.

It is a CoolerMaster H116 Cooper with screws opposed to the clip-on.

    I bought it from NewEgg.

What is the motherboard in question, and does it have any kind of fan controls within the BIOS?

@Kamryn You could try either change the speed of the fan in UEFI / Bios or if that does not work.
    Try speedfan :)

Try and adjust the fan curve, or speed, from within the BIOS.
