The empty new case arrived at my house to sit there and mock me until at the very minimum the new motherboard arrives.

    Email to my stepdaughter:

I think I might be in the doghouse....

Your mom asked me how much I just spent on my computer “upgrade”. Well…. It’s really not so much an upgrade as it is about 90% new computer. I knew that I should not have bought the whole computer from Best Buy and build my own instead. Damn Far Cry 5 that’s what set me off. I want to run everything at the highest setting! So my $1,200 Best Buy computer is getting “upgraded” – that really means rebuilt.

    Corsair Obsidian 450D case: $120
ASUS ROG Crosshair VII Hero (WiFi) motherboard: $289
    Corsair Vengeance 16GB 3200Mhz RAM: $105
Kingwin 1000 Watt Power Supply: $50
Corsair Hydro H100X Extreme water CPU cooler with dual fan radiator: $80 (but there is a $10 rebate!)
    Second XFX RX580 8GB DDR5 overclocked graphics card (because 1 just isn’t enough!): $137

Being able to run just about any video game I want on max settings at 100+ FPS: priceless!

“Upgrade” total: $781 – so about 10-12 pairs of new shoes for mama to buy my way out of the doghouse.
Reusing from my “old” computer: Ryzen 7 2700X CPU, 1 XFX RX580 8GB DDR5 overclocked graphics card, 250GB NVMe SSD, 500GB SATA 2.5” SSD, 2x 1TB hard drives.

Next step: pop a Ryzen 5 processor in my “old” computer to give to mama as an upgrade to her blue room computer.
    Love you!
    Dad

Is it too late to take the Best Buy computer back? Doesn't sound like you'll be using much of that purchase.

    PROJECT UPDATE!

Motherboard arrived yesterday. New motherboard is in case, power supply, CPU w/existing cooler, slow RAM, SSDs, HDDs, video card moved over from old computer to new computer. Fired it up and everything works!

Arriving today: second video card, 3200 mhz RAM, Arctic thermal paste. Arriving tomorrow: water cooler. I told my wife I was calling in sick to work. She said, "You are going to work to pay for all that crap!"

    Overclocking and benchmarking this weekend!

$50 1000w PSU? Not sure I would be comfortable with that.
