Intel Optane

    Intel Optane

Have started building my next game killer PC which is based on the MSI Z390 Godlike motherboard and Intel 9900K CPU.
It will have a 1GB NVMe M.2 drive as a C drive. The other two NVMe slots will have 2 32GB Optane modules in to speed up the 2 4TB spinning hard drives.

Does anyone know if the Optane caches the physical disk or the partitions on the drive? Hoping it is the physical disk rather than the partitions. I plan a few partitions on each drive to separate stuff.

According to this, only your boot drive gets accelerated.

But it was just a quick google.

Personally, I would just add more SSD`s

The latest Intel Optane application allows the secondary drive to be accelerated.

I used to think it was a gimmick but it's actually really good. You set it up in Intel Rapid Storage Technology and it merges the M.2 Optane module to the drive you choose. I'm not sure of you can use more than one Optane Module though. I have a 32GB Optane in my work desktop and 32GB Optane in my work laptop that I'm typing this on. It was a night and day difference between the 5400RPM 1TB HD and adding Optane to the system. And I'm a SSD snob.

Incorrect. It now does secondary drives as well otherwise I would not have brought it. A 4TB SSD is way to expensive

Yes, I saw that in reply #3

Maybe I should get one for my 4TB games drive

But so far I`ve never had any issues.

I rarely, if ever, use my W7 Samsung 960 Evo M.2, but I`ve been considering putting a 970 Pro 512 GB in it`s place and put W10 on that.
