As the title states, I'm planning to buy a used Chromebox to convert it to a sort of HTPC. I've read somewhere that Plex OS can be installed directly but I'm planning to install Windows 10 so it can double as a mini computer in the living room.
I'm thinking that if I replace the built-in SSD with a larger capacity one, I can immediately install Win10 OS via USB. Since the parts are very similar to a normal PC, drivers would not be a problem.
Didn't look to difficult, I'm sure someone else can add advice for you that has some experience with it
Thanks for the feedback! I read that link before I posted this thought installing Windows might be too difficult. I still posted here though so I can have more insights.
Update: I went with the plan and bought the Chromebox CN62. The previous owner was kind enough to upgrade the RAM for me so from 2GB, it is now 16GB. Coupled with the i7 5500U, I think this would be a great HTPC even without a GPU
I opened the case and the SSD it came with is just 16GB. The specific model is attached with this post. Asus's product page also describes this as 16GB M.2 (NGFF) SSD. I'm planning to replace this with a Samsung 860 EVO (MZ-M6E500BW) but Amazon states that they're not sure if the parts are compatible. I have no reason to believe that it is not compatible but I would like to ask your opinion on this.
One thing I notice in your photo is it looks like the SSD has one screw in the middle of the end. The 860 EVO SSD does not have the notch in the end for the single screw.
This appears to be the SSD in the computer now: M.2 SSD 400S
